BIG Problem

I installed the Unofficial Windows 98 patches.

Now the computer does not go into Windows, not normal nor Safe Mode. I get a
fatal exception error at 0187 (or (0167):BFF9E0BF.

I can also sometimes see an error in VXD VWIN32(05).

Can someone help me get the computer to work again?

I couldn't reinstall Windows 98 from a CD either. Setup thinks (wrongly)
that disk commpression is used.

Thank you.

Hello:

Although the unofficial service pack is made from official releases and
should not have caused a problem...
obviously it did.

The "compression" problem you experienced was probably caused by using the
wrong boot disk
when you tried to reinstall Win98.

There are several things you can do here.

1) go to www.bootdisk.com and get a boot disk from the *exact* version of
windows that you are using

2) delete the compression driver (drivespace.bin) from your boot disk
and/or from the root directory of your current system

For example, if you try to boot your machine, hit F8 and select command
prompt

then cd\ C:

now simply try C:\ del *.bin

3) One other thing I just thought of that you might want to try before a
reinstall...
from the command prompt try scanreg /restore and restore the registry
to a date prior to the installation of the undates

....
that might work

I tried scanreg /restore twice. It didn't solve the problem.

How do I find out the exact version of Windows that is installed? I though
that I was using the correct CD, but it is possible that I didn't.

Can I reinstall Windows without loosing all the configuration info? That
would be VERY helpful.

Which unofficial patch. Where did you get it from?

I just checked, there are no .bin files on C:

The service pack is for 98SE. Is your disk also for 98SE?

I know that the service pack is for SE. Yes, I have a CD of SE. The problem
now is that I'm not sure that SE is what was installed on the computer.

Boot from a startup disc and type ...

dir c:\command.com

For Win98SE you should see something like this:

========================================================
Volume in drive C is FUJ_WIN98SE
Volume Serial Number is 11E8-163A
Directory of C:\

COMMAND COM 93,890 04-23-99 10:22p COMMAND.COM
1 file(s) 93,890 bytes
========================================================

You can also get to the same point by hitting the F8 key during bootup
and booting to the command prompt.

For "Contents of the Windows 98 Startup Disk", see this MSKB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q185645/

COMMAND COM 93,880 05-11-98 8:01p

Thought it might be that one. Unfortunately, there's no "undo" for that SP
or for individual parts.

This is where the benefit of a good Backup scheme becomes apparent. Unless
someone can guide you to the flag that will let you reinstall, you're pretty
well SOL, methinks. Even then, I'd slate this machine for a clean reinstall.

How to Determine If a Hard Disk Is Compressed:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193051/en-us

===================================================================
Once the command prompt appears, type the following line, and then
press ENTER:

dir d*.* /a /p

If you see any files named Dblspace.<nnn> or Drvspace.<nnn> (where
<nnn> is a number from 000 to 254), the drive is compressed. If you
view all the files on the drive, you do not see all of your files.
===================================================================

What do you see when you type ...

dir c:\
dir c:\ /ah
dir c:\ /as

It's possible they are hidden...but with the right boot floppy, it will not
matter

just make sure you use a floppy for windows98

if you use a dos, win95 or winME floppy you will get that compression driver
error.

anyway, once you get a working cd support boot floppy

from dos you will have to navigate over to your windows folder and rename
win.com

for example C:\windows> rename win.com win.old

now you can navigate back to the cd drive and start your installation

pay careful attention as you will be asked if you want to install windows in
the C:\windows.000 folder

to install Windows back over itself, at this point you opt not to take the
default

but instead you must specificy your original windows folder...which is
generally C:\windows

It is a win98SE only service pack. It will not even run on win98.
