Stand-alone virus scanner for Windows 98?

T

Tony

Can anyone recommend a stand-alone virus scanner that will work with Windows 98?

I need something I can use for maintenance that I can burn onto a CD-R disc - put it
into the CD drive and then scan the system.

FYI, Trend Micro makes a great stand-alone scanner sysclean.com, but it only works for
Win2K/NT/XP.

Thanks!!!

Try the free "ultimate boot CD", which includes a bunch of tools, among them
several virus scanners:

http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/

Since all tools boot directly from the CD, they should work on any PC with
windows-type partitions, such as FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS. Windsow 98 uses one
of the FAT types, usually FAT32.

Here's a DOS based program, available at the below sites
which I've used for many years on Win9X & ME machines
with virus definition files last updated the first of February
of this year via the program's native FP-Updater utility.

From the Garbo site @ Vaasa Univ.
http://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/virus.html
fp-316b.zip 09-Feb-2005 2 MB
(the older version, I use)

or the newer final version from the Wroclaw
Centre for Networking & Supercomputing
http://ftp.pwr.wroc.pl/pub/stuba/avir/
or via file transfer protocol:
ftp://ftp.pwr.wroc.pl/pub/stuba/avir/
fp-316f.zip 18-Oct-2006 00:00 4 MB
fp-def.zip 04-Feb-2008 12:38 8 MB
fp-win.exe 17-Apr-2007 13:48 11 MB (Windows based?)

This hotfix will upgrade the RealTime Protector
driver from version 3.16f or 3.16f2 to 3.16g.
http://www.f-prot.com/news/gen_news/070615_windows98hotfix.html

I hope one of these works to fulfil your needs.

Good luck

As far as I know, Sysclean still works on Win9x/ME but it is no longer technically
supported. Just like it works on Win2003 and Vista.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe

http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

English:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/09/scan-your-computer-with-multiple-anti-virus-for-free/

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose Unzip
Choose Close

Execute C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

Norton Antivirus 2002.

If you can find it (it also came as part of Norton SystemWorks 2002).

Up until recently, it was fairly well behaved as far as updating
itself. Lately I've been downloading the Intelligent Updater package
and applying it manually.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-SAVCE.html

http://definitions.symantec.com/defs/20080325-003-i32.exe

Even though NAV 2002 expires itself after a year of use, it's very
easy to perpetually renew it for free (no charge) by simply
uninstalling and reinstalling it. Don't let the age of the product
fool you. Norton includes updates of the scan engine with almost
every new set of virus definition file updates.

Symantec Corporate AV 9 (and maybe 10) works on Win-98, so that's
another option (and it has no expiry date once installed).

Just want to say, thanks for the stuba link.

Nice file base for some programs I previously used, and some that are now
difficult to find.

Do you have anymore links to similar file bases?

You're right, David. I have an older version of Sysclean. And I'm

Note that the Engine (Sysclean.com) is just as important as the signature files
(lpt$vpn.???) as well as the fact that the older Sysclean.com file does NOT support the anti

Please do me a favour, backup your older Sysclean.com file and use the latest Sysclean.com

Here's what happened when I ran the latest Sysclean.com on Win98:

1. The program created its temporary files and then hung, with no
windows visible.

2. I opened Task Manager and terminated two Sysclean processes.

3. I ran Sysclean.exe. It got an error message about a missing file
and said that the spyware scan will start disabled.

4. I clicked the "Scan" button. The scan ran and deleted the Eicar
Test Virus that I had downloaded.

I've just downloaded and tested version 1,2,0,1003 of sysclean.com
from within a Win98SE DOS box and it appears to run OK ... for virus
scanning only. I couldn't test the antispyware components because
Sysclean gave me an error popup to the effect that "SSAPI [was] not
supported on current OS. Spyware scanning will be disabled".

Here is some info I've extracted from the sysclean.log file:

Damage Cleanup Engine (DCE) 5.32(Build 1011)
VSAPI Engine Version : 8.500-1002
VSCANTM Version : 3.00-1014 (Official Build)

FWIW, this is TrendMicro's scan engine update URL:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/engine.asp

Until now I've been using the last Win9x PC-cillin scan engine
(vsapi32.vxd, ver 8.320-1003, Sep 20, 2006) with the latest pattern
files, and performing manual updates. It appears that the scan engine
included in sysclean.com (vsapi32.dll) is a later version dated Jun
21, 2007. Maybe I should switch to using Sysclean instead of
PC-cillin.

Thank you and Steve.

The latest version of my Multi AV Scanning Tool, v6.00, will incorporate the anti spyware
capabilities of the new Trend Micro Sysclean.com.
