I am still trying to find the cause of the following problem ...

I recall that there is a way to boot the system in verbose mode but
can't remember exactly how. Anyone know?

I need it to work for Windows 98. Besides,
I thought it was something simple like setting a flag in
autoexec.bat (or config.sys).

Sorry, my mistake. The newsgroup name, and mentioned
path C:\Windows\OPTIONS\CABS alone, should have
provided me a clue :-( Other than the bootlog file (with
these caveats http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=127970)
and/or inducing step by step via F8 after POST, I surely
don't know.

Verbose Mode is a feature of WinXP not used in Win98
It is not clear what you want. AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS are DOS startup procedures (not needed
by Win98, although Win95 used them.)

If you mean you want to choose from a start menu,
run MSCONFIG / General / Advanced
and check the box beside
Enable Startup Menu.

If you want to boot into Safe Mode, hold down
the Ctl key during reboot as soon as the BIOS
display ends.
