Server 2008 Beta 3 is CRAP

Yeah, I know this is the 2003 Server newsgroup but there doesn't seem to be a
specific one for 2008 yet that I can find.

This Beta is totally rubbish. I mean it is appallingly bad. I don't expect
Betas to work 100% but I expect them to actually do something useful,
otherwise why bother with them?

First clue this thing might not be of any practical use was the build
number: 6001 - isn't that just one along from the Vista RTM?

I booted it up, and was presented with Server Manager, which is an
integrated MMC for common management tasks. I clicked on "Add Features" and
added in what I thought were some fairly innocuous features, consisting of
the "Desktop Experience" (Vista GUI add-ons), the admin tools (not the actual
services, just the tools) including the IIS admin tool, and a few other minor
bits and pieces and after a total age (on a quad-core PC with 4GB of RAM and
a SAS 15,000rpm drive) it asks me to re-boot. So I restart the computer and
then I'm presented with about 20 different error messages.

Server Manager is dead at this point, every time I try to do anything, MMC
crashes and I can get no further with it. There are no other additional
admin tools installed over and above what Vista has, despite my supposedly
installing them.

Not one to give up, I tried installing Adobe Reader 8.1 for Vista on it.
The installation crashes with a .NET Framework error message.

I can't use the MMC anymore so I go to the Run box and type in dcpromo -
after a couple of minutes I'm presented with some fantastically complex error
message.

Basically this Beta is completely useless. I can't get it to do the most
simple of tasks. It's just basically a broken version of Vista RTM with a
few things added into it that don't work.

And the RTM is supposed to be coming out in February?

Steve,

Do you have a question or a point with this posting or were you just using the newsgroups as your blog space, and posting your review?

Cheers
Kevinm

"Yeah, I know this is the 2003 Server newsgroup"
Actually, you don't know.
This is a server general newsgroup, for all servers of which 2003 is
only one.

Do not male any more of the build number than it is.
Your assumption about the relationship with Windows Vista is wrong,.

February is a long ways away,
Assuming your information about February RTM is correct, 6 months is a
long time even for a Beta.

If you post details of the error messages in a new thread, someone may
be able to give you a solution.
But first make sure your hardware meets all the requirements of Server
2008.
If the manufacturers are unclear or do not know, assume not
compatible.
