The Linux car finished dead last.

No surprise there.

Just imagine if America had used Linux in the Mars Explorer program:

Newspaper cutting:

"America to Launch Fifth Mars Rocket"

"NASA is ready to launch its fifth attempt at getting the ill-fated Mars
Rover vehicles to the right planet. Following the loss of power in the last
mission which caused the spacecraft to continue on its course but at a
lesser velocity which means the craft will miss Mars altogether and
probably eventually crash into Mercury or the Sun sometime later this year,
a fifth attempt at the mission costing over three billion dollars is to be
launched on Monday. An insider is reported to have said that if this fifth
mission fails then the Linux operating system which runs the onboard
computers is to be abandoned in favour of a more reliable Microsoft
operating system. At present all systems are running to schedule for
Monday's launch and everything appears to be well but that's what we
reported last time also pre-launch. NASA believe that they have located the
first mission en route to Saturn, and they are attempting to remotely
decompile the kernel and fix the incompatibility with the hardware attached
to the thruster directional control rudders that caused the first two
missions to veer wildly off course just outside of earth's atmosphere. It
was confirmed yesterday that the spacecraft used for the second attempt did
indeed hit an asteroid and was destroyed."

" Mission three was lost after the communications interface nysteriously
packed up when the central computer crashed and the backup computer refused
to boot having also crashed earlier. The spacecraft is believed to be
drifting helplessly in solar orbit somewhere around the trajectories of Mars
and Earth: If the current theories concerning its projected position and
course are correct, then the craft should pass earth again in januasry 2145
by which time the Linux operating system may actually work properly."

$125M, right down the old drain...and that would probably be
worth $180M or so today.

This could very easily be blamed on Linux. (It would be
wrong, of course, but one can very easily blame Linux.
Many do so, in fact.)

I must admit that it had nothing to do with Linux it was just America's
usual backwardness that caused it. (9 years-ish ago.)

It probably would have landed in the African bush somewhere and the Linux
people would have proclaimed they had discovered life on 'Mars'.
