Operating sys disk as an Ext drive?

I am in a screaming hurry,
I have an old W98 comp that gives me 3 "beeps"
when I power on. then blank screen.

I need to search the HDD for some old files
I need to give my programmer.

Can I simply hoik out the HDD, plug it into an ext HDD case
and search for the files with my XP?

Yes!

XP should have no problems accessing the drive

If you're in a hurry, the fastest thing you can do is remove the drive
from the '98 system and connect it directly to a second (working)
computer (which can be running anything, like win-98, or 2K, or XP).
Connecting the desired drive in place of the second machine's CD/DVD
drive would be the fastest way to go.

You can always investigate the beep code later if you need to get the old
machine running.
The errors are typically video or RAM related...but the mobo manual (if you
can find one on-line)
would elaborate

Ta 98 guy,
my circumstance would obviate attaching as an ext HDD.

I have a case that had the ribbon cable pulled apart
(those cheap cases from Taiwan are a worry)
so I have an ext case with a substitute 3 foot ribbon cable,
It all looks like a dog's brekky, but it works.

I'll just plug the HDD into the ribbon cable.

Yes I thought about that, but alas! we are all caught up in
built-in "obsolescence", I can pick up Govt P4's now for $40
so anything less is simply not worth it.
I'll rob the CDRom drives etc, then a short funeral perhaps.

Even though I try to re-use everything I can...
If it's a P-1 or less it goes to the recyclers.

I find P-III's being tossed out all the time...
and even an occasional P-IV

If you weren't in a hurry, I'd suggest that you probably have a RAM
fault.

If you mean a 3 foot ide ribbon cable, don't suggest it. In fact, I would
avoid that.
