Internet explorer display problem

Here is a problem I get sometimes on normal websites, like yahoo.com or
cnn.com:

Each time I click on properties it reads:
res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL
I looked in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. The SHDOCLC.DLL file is present.

This shows up where advertisements are are suppose to show a picture or
animation in a web page.

Any ideas?

It sounds as if you have something blocking the pages. Please provide a
list of any anti-virus, spyware, adware, malware, firewall programs you may
be running. Also, are you using the HOSTS file to block unwanted ads? If
this is something that has recently manifested itself, think about anything
you may have added or changed in that period.

Running Superantispyware in the background and it runs a daily scan @05:00
every day. CCleaner & RegistryMedic are also installed.

Not familiar with Superantispyware. Did you just install this recently? I
don't think CCleaner or the RegMedic would be the culprit. Try disabling
the Superantispyware when you run across a site you can't load and see if it
makes a difference.
Maybe one of the gurus will be along shortly and shed more light on this
issue......

I can't say for sure but I wouldn't expect it to be SuperAntiSpyware causing
the problem. I run that myself although that's on XP but it is the Pro
version so is protecting in real time but I only do a scan once a week not
every day.
I have the free version on a WinME machine and have never had any problems.
Have you tried asking over at their forum to see if it is SuperAntiSpyware
causing the problem, if it is they will have a fix I'm sure as the support
is very good, and of course if it's not the problem something else on your
machine is playing up <g>

It very likely isn't 'SUPERAntiSpyware'.
I have this situation once in a while, but noticed that it is caused by
clicking the mouse button too quickly. If you tried it again, as suggested,
only a bit slower, will it work then? Let us know, please.

SUPERAntiSpyware does not filter any web content, so it's not causing
the issue.

Nick....tried to change this around (we TOP post in the MS news groups,
btw).....but I had meant to say I have Super AntiSpyware on here (XP)
and it certainly does NOT cause any problems.

I am highly suspicious that it is either CCleaner or the Registry one.
I found CCleaner to be quite intrusive and I didn't trust it. As to
interfering with web browsing, can't speak to that, but I wouldn't be
surprised if one of the above two didn't cause the problem. Or the OP
messing in the Registry. (G)

Okay, so we have ruled out SuperAntispyware and I can tell you I have never
had any problems with CCleaner. I guess it could be a Reg issue, not sure.
How about sending some of the URL's you can't open, so, we can try. Are all
of these pages that you have been able to access before??

Well, it is certainly not a problem with the speed of clicking the mouse.
As for websites, mail.yahoo.com is a good example. It usually has one of
those ads that causes the problem.

Well, I went right to the site with no probs. And you haven't added or
updated any protection programs about the time this issue started?? I still
think you have something blocking the sites, I just don't have any idea
what. One way to eliminate software as a problem would be to do a selective
startup and stop about half of your protection programs from starting and
try the site. Then block the other half and try again.....if either
instance allows the connect, you would know the problem app is in that
group. It would be a process of elimination.

Maybe someone else has a better idea.......that's my best shot. Wish I
could help you more. Be sure to keep us posted on your progress, especially
if you resolve the issue.......I would like to know how!!

I have a registry backup from the end of December. I know the ads were
appearing at that time. What would happen if I imported that registry?

Four months is a long time but.. So long as you use System Restore, you
should be able to 'Undo your last restoration' and get back to your present

By the way, I did also import the registry from December and it did not fix
the advertisement display problem, but it did not seem to do anything evil

Heirloom asked whether you were using a HOSTS file to filter web sites in
his initial post but you never answered that question.

Removing any hosts file you might have added will restore access to any
sites that were blocked via the hosts file. By default the hosts file in
Win Me is empty containing just an example entry. Were you perhaps using
the MVP Hosts file? If so blocking adverts and access to trojan sites is
its purpose and those using it will see messages similar to those you were
seeing when their browser attempts to follow a link to a blocked site.

A big 'thank you' to Mike!!
Martin, you didn't have to eliminate the Hosts file altogether, just the
entry that was blocking the page you wanted to access! If you are you using
the MVP Hosts file, as Mike asked, you would be better off not going to any
of the sites that are blocked.....that is why they are on the list in the
first place!! I am pretty sure you are not using the MVP file, as it would
not have a legitimate Yahoo! site blocked (I believe you example was
'mail.yahoo.com', or similar).

The only detriment to not using the Hosts file is stated on the MVP Hosts
file site : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
I can also recommend the HostsXpert file manager, a great little app that
makes it extremely easy to change, add to and update the Hosts file.

Lastly, (mind you I am not trying to be demeaning in any way), you really
should try to head the advice given and answer any and all questions from
folks trying to assist you with an issue. This thread could have been just
a few entries long and saved folks a lot of time if you had checked your
Hosts file in the beginning. No biggie.....I am just glad you got
everything working. Do try using the MVP Hosts file and the file
manager.....it does make a positive difference in your surfing experience!!

ok, thanks. Not using the MVP HOSTS file yet, but will consider doing so.

The HOSTS file I was using was generated automatically by an antivirus
program. I think it got a little overzealous.

Martin,
While you are at it, consider going to a different AV.....one that is
not so controlling! AVG and Avast! are great little AV's that are free for
personal use. I think I asked you what AV you were using in my first reply,
that info would have helped. Anyway, if yours is creating it's own HOSTS
file, I would certainly go with one of the two I just mentioned!
