dos prompt issue

please help.

i am installing win 98 se for a friend of mine. hard drive is fully
formatted. i put the start up disk and the dos promt comes on. i use cd
support and then i get to the d drive for the cd rom.

so I am at the d prompt, the cd drivers are installed and seing my cd rom.

now for the life of me, i cannot remember what dos command to type in here
to get the cd to kick in.

i tried several

cdwin 98

cdwin_98

setup

I am lost.

got your post. setup at the d prompt does not work.

is it not a cdwin command?

I did alot of these before...But I am lost now.

Then you did *not* read my reply as I specifically stated that most win98
boot floppies
setup a ramdrive as D: and you cannot run setup from there.

You need to watch the screen as the machine boots to see which drive is
assigned to the cdrom

then log on to that drive and run setup from there.

The cdrom could be assigned letter E:

IIRC the boot disks from www.bootdisk.com assign the letter R:


that is why you need to *watch* the screen to see which letter is assigned

To be sure you have the correct drive letter for the CD drive, pay close
attention near the end of boot where you should see: "Preparing to start your
computer. This may take a few minutes, please wait...". Shortly after that you
should see the assigned drive letter for the CD drive. If you have
partitioned/formatted the entire drive as C: with no other partitions, the next
available letter will be assigned to the DOS RAM drive and the CD drive will be
assigned the next letter after that.

Once you know the CD drive letter, at the DOS prompt type the command below
and press Enter. Replace CDLetter with your actual assigned CD drive letter.

cdletter:\setup.exe

If that fails, to make sure you have the proper letter, at the DOS prompt type
the commands below and press Enter after each.

cdletter:
dir

You should see the contents of the install disk if the drive letter is
correct, otherwise you'll see the contents of another drive or get a invalid
drive message.

Uhm, when typing in the cd command there should be a space between the
command [cd] and the drive letter\folder.

So once you determine the CD drive type > cd {drive} then type > cd win98
then > setup

Uhm, I didn't present the cd (change directory) command to the OP, I
specifically presented only the cd drive letter typed as cdletter. You don't
have to use the cd (change directory) command to switch/change drives, it's only
needed to change directories in a drive. If the drive letter is E: then the
command I presented would be:

e:\setup.exe

It's been some time since I've installed 98/SE so it could very well be:

e:\
cd win98
setup.exe

That was my purpose for including the dir (directory) command so the OP could
be sure.

Right, just posted under yours. But you are correct, the drive letter
change would be effectuated by typing the drive letter e.g., {Drive}: at
the prompt.
IF the CD was being run from within Windows or otherwise, then the
autorun.inf and CD root setup.exe might have been used, UNLESS its a full
install CD..

this is what I thought, but when I type this in it does not work. It use to
work for me all the time.

The CD rom is seeing my CD as when I do a DIR I see the contents....and I do
see setup.exe there and I am under the D drive which is the CD Rom drive.

or
d:\setup.exe

Or try from the A:> prompt.
d:
cd d:\win98
setup.exe

or:
d:
cd d:\win98
d:\win98\setup.exe

or:

d:\setup.exe

What is the *exact* error mesage you got?


BTW: If all else fails, you may be able to just boot off your win98 cd if
you set your bios
to boot first from cdrom.

The standard Windows 98 installation CD is not bootable. Care to research a
bit more? Or, if you already know that only certain Win98 CDs are bootable
(special OEM versions) you could include a caveat?

I just thought of one other possibility.

Is the cd the same cd that win98 was used previously to install Windows?

Or (possibly) would it be a windows *companion* cd that some mfgs include to
be used when installing
additional components.

If it's the companion cd, it is infact missing the setup file as it was not
designed to be used for installations

That won't work, because you haven't gone to D:. Try (as Brian A. &
others said)...

CD D:\Win98
D:
Setup.exe

If that fails, try...
DIR D:\Win98\Setup.exe /a

Does the result look just like this...?...

If you get a different size or date-- something may be amiss!
