how to recover registry damage

most often worms and trojans modify registry to alter behaviour on user
input.
sometimes on running antispyware or antivirus like mcafee, the virus gets
removed, but the registry changes are not recovered.
how to get the pc back to the original shape after a virus removal or
attack.

please help.
