Directory Service

Does the Directory Service in a windows 2000 domain replaces the computer
browser service.
I suspect the browser service from generating a lot of network traffic, so I
want to disable the service.
In the Windows 2000 domain are 2003 member servers present, xp and 2000 pro
clients.

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001, Active Directory does
"replace" the Brower service in many cases, one can live without the
browser service.

In a network that has a large number of computers, this list is not as
useful as it is in smaller networks - it's not efficient/effective to scroll
through several thousand computer names!

So, it is fairly common in larger networks to disable this service. For
browsing to work when there is more than one LAN (connected by routers),
there has to be a WINS server and the computers have to be configured (e.g.
via DHCP) to register with the WINS service.

When you key the name of the computer (e.g. in Start, Run or Map Network
Drive - \\computername), Windows will resolve the name to an IP address
using DNS - the browser service is not required for this to work.
