exception 0E

I

IsakAfrika

Windows ME, but in this respect probably no different from Windows 98.

Random events when starting it:
- booting from IDE 0 ... okay ... invalid system disk (can't even boot)
- black screen with cursor (before desktop comes) it then sometimes reboots
itself
- can sometimes get into Safe Mode, will then always crash, usually within
minutes but occasionally allowing to type a letter or two. It sometimes just
freezes, at other times gives BSOD with : Windows Error / an exception 0E has
occurred at 0028:C001DA in VxD called from 0028:C1493144 in VxD. This in one
example - the details vary, though 0028:C seem to be always the same
- Sometimes also the message, 'winword error in kernel32.dll'. I suppose
this is not related, but mention it in case.

It is a bit of an old dog, but I would like to keep it working another year.
If anyone can help I'd be grateful. It seems to be a driver issue, but which?
What is a 'virtual device driver' anyway?

If you can get into Safe mode, try using System Restore.

SR may be a futile attempt.
Here is a list of possible situations and, once pinpointed, to find the
solution(s).

Best of luck.

Sounds like your HDD *may* be beginning to fail.

If you are getting crashes in Safe Mode too, followed by a freeze (rather
than an error report) then it generally rules out most drivers. Perhaps you
better start a little earlier in the chain and rule out (or rule in!) WinMe
and/or your HDD.

Try booting from your WinMe Set-up floppy disk into Real Mode DOS. Let it
continue running into the (DOS) Help pages and leave it there and scroll
through the pages for a while to see if it locks/hangs. If it be behaves
(give it a reasonable time to be sure that things are OK) then it would
appear to be either you HDD or WinMe that has the problem.

If OK, then that reinforces the first diagnosis and before you proceed any
further, you may want to consider trying to recover any important (personal)
data from the drive BEFORE you do any further testing. If you data is
important DO NOT do any further testing - especially anything which would be
caused to write to your HDD (eg.scandisk)

Come back with your results and decide what you want to do next.

As the word implies: a driver for a virtual device.
If Mike comes around, he can give you details about this subject, being
quite knowledgeable about it.
Are you telling us, your system is 'virtual'? <H>.

Wish I had a little more time and would save myself from these pitfalls.
Thanks for setting me straight on this one and the OP.
As for top-posting, I thought there were exceptions, as in this case, but
apparently not. Please, accept my apologies.

Harry.

Harry......first of all, you claim to be retired.
I too am retired.
My husband is retired.
A lot of our friends are retired.
We have all the time in the world......
So what in heck does not allow you to have "time"......frankly I think
it is just a poor excuse.

And please......stop answering questions when you don't have one clue
what you are talking about!!!! One of these days, you are going to lead
someone into major trouble. That is why I.....and others......pull you
up short when you goof up.

"Heather":

Once and for all: You don't have a clue what I'm all about.
You are free to do as you wish and so am I.
So far I haven't led anyone astray and don't plan on doing so.
Whatever subjects have been dealt with, served as a learning experience one
way or the other.
I wish you, your husband and your friends a long life.

The Head.
