My kids were playing with my older laptop and tried to use the install disk.
Unfortunatly they did not complete the set-up process and I don't have an ID
Key. Microsoft support would not help me since the version is unsupported.
Any way to get a key for this thing?

Your fastest route to recovery is probably
1. From DOS
SCANREG /RESTORE
to restart Windows with a registry antedating
the children's interference.
2. When you get Windows running, locate
the ProductKey via REGEDIT and write it
down on the CD sleeve or label.

No, the fastest way is to enter
W7XTC
2YWFB
K6BPT
GMHMV
B6FDY

or another key hundreds of which are all over the web.

(I do not have children nor would I let them anywhere near a
computer - ever heard of BIOS passwords? - but this MAY not work
if the original installation key must be provided. If so, try
Don's method.)

The W98 Product Key is generally found on the Windows user manual, the
certificate of authenticity, a sticker on the PC or a sticker on the sleeve
or jewel case the Windows CD came in. The 25-digit key is 5 groups of 5
alpha/numeric characters. The Key might be available from the system:

If the system is working in either safe or normal mode:

Open regedit.exe to this key and look in the right pane for the entry
ProductKey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

If the system is not working, start the computer with a floppy startup disk.

At the A: prompt, type: C:\Windows\Command\Find /N "ProductKey"
C:\Windows\System.dat
(Note: ProductKey must be typed in upper and lower case letters as shown
and there is a space after: "Find" after: "/N" and after:
"ProductKey"

If the hard drive has been formatted or replaced, try finding one using
google.com

I suggest writing the ProductKey on the CD with a Sharpie marker.

Hi,
The way to find the Product Key in the Registry is:
Start>Run>regedit>My computer is at the top (with a - in front of it. If it
has a +, click on the + this makes it
a -)>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Click on
the folder not the +. Other folders you click on the + to make them a -.
When you click on the Current Version folder, a list appears on the right
pane. Look in there for the Product Key. The Product is on the left of this
list. The product Key is at the right. I hope this helps.

DON, I have the orignial 98SE disk, with the Product Key, but none of the
Keys including my own works.. It's not being accepted, say that it's not a
good key. When I turn my computer on, it goes directly to the Windows setup
screen, I've tired to get into the BIOS, but the laptop isn't answering the
command.. it goes directly to the Set-Up wizzard..

Download http://www.62nds.com/62nds/diag.exe to a floppy. Start the laptop,
tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu appears and select
"Command Prompt". Then insert the floppy, type "a:\diag", press "Enter" and
look for "Product Key".

What kind of disk is it? Retail? Generic OEM? Branded OEM? The answer to
that will determine what kind of key you need to use. Another thing is
to make sure you enter all the characters properly. A 5 can look like an
S, an 8 can look like a B, a 6 like a G, etc.

Also what is the make and model of your laptop? And how do you normally
access the BIOS?

Thank you for responding.

The CD came with a desktop I had years ago, it's not a copy. It's an
orgininal microsoft CD. The 1995 laptop I am trying to install it on is a
CTX EzBook 700E. I did find the user manual, Alt, Ctrl, S allows me
occasionally (if I hit it right) to access the BIOS.. . Right now the BIOS
are set up to use the hard drive.. I had it to use the CDrom drive, when I
tired to install 98SE, it's installed, but now it won't accept the Key I
have or one I got off the web...

I would appreciate it if you can help me...

One more thing I forgot to add... The laptop has a floppy drive, but I have
no ability to use it, no way to copy anything to a floppy. When I went into
the BIOS thinking it was set only to load with a floppy, I changed the order
to accept the CDrom drive, that worked installing the windows 98sa, but as I
said before.. the laptop won't accept the two keys I've tired. Right now
it's back to using the hard drive.. and that's why it goes directly to the
product key request screen..

I am guessing that all I need now is a product key that works..

Please explain why this is so.

If you are saying that you changed the boot sequence, then change it back.
If you need a boot floppy, see http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

If you are saying that booting from the hard drive takes you directly to
Windows setup, try tapping the F8 key repeatedly during bootup, then
select "Safe mode command prompt only". Then download
http://www.62nds.com/62nds/diag.exe to a floppy and run it on the
laptop by typing "a:\diag".

Because I don't have a floppy drive on my desktop computer, it's only on the
laptop which doesn't want to load windows, so there is no way I can burn a
floppy from the net.. I can't access the floppy on the laptop until I get
windows up and running..

I know that and I had already changed it back to hard drive, but while it
sequence was changed to CDrom I was able to download Windows 98sa.. only
problem is I don 't have a product key that works, can't understand that
since I have the original key from the CD disk I use on an old desktop
computer. I even tried a different product key, but it would work either...
Besides all that, I was told that it would take 9 floppies to make a
bootdisk copy.. I DON'T have the ability yet, until I get windows up and
running, to copy a floppy disk.. Windows 98se is loaded on the computer,
but it won't work without a product key..

I've decided to give it to someone I know that is better with computers then
I am...

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP.......

Again, what type of disc is this "orgininal microsoft CD"? Is it retail?
Or generic OEM?

Well, you'll need to hit it right. :)

Once you enter the BIOS, configure it so your PC boots off your CD-ROM
drive. Of course, you will need the proper 98SE Installation disc--most
likely a generic OEM disc. And we have yet to establish whether or not
that's what you have! (I suspect you are trying to use a branded OEM
disc. Am I right?)

That's because the only certain keys work with certain installation
discs. Either obtain a generic OEM disc (and enter the key on your
laptop, assuming your laptop originally had 98 SE) or purchase a retail
disc (which will have its own key).
