Decommissioning of a Server

I want to decommission my old primary W2003SE server (the hand crank broke)
and I undersatnd that part of the process involves the FSMO. Can the FSMO
process be done while the system is in production or do I do it off-hours?
Also, I have a static IP address assigned to the DNS address, on the same
server. After I demote the old server, can I move the IP address to my new
server?

Not necessary to do this after hours.

Delete the references that associate the IP address with the old server name
from DNS and WINS if you have WINS running.

I know this sounds like a rudimentary question but I want to be sure where I
am going. Where is the DNS references located for the IP?

Danny Sanders

In the DNS zone.

Click Start, click Run, type dnsmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
In the Dnsmgmt dialog box, expand ServerName, and then expand Forward Lookup
Zones.

Look in the folders for the IP address where it is associated with the old
server name. Check the reverse lookup zone also.

Jump the gun. I do have one more question. When I run the FSMO processes,
does the current DNS IP stay active (until I drop it out) or does the IP on
the new server take over?

When you move the FSMO roles, nothing at all happens to IP addresses. DCs
(should) have a static IP address that needs to be changed manually.
