Can't Install MicrSoft Bookshelf 94

I have an old desktop PC (Pentium II, 300 MHz, circa 1997) running Win98
Second Edition with a Diamond Viper V550 video card. When I try to install
MicroSoft "Bookshelf 94" I immediately get an error message that Bookshelf 94
needs VGA or better and the installation stops with no apparent work around.
The Viper V550 is presently set to 800 x 600 pixels, 32 bit color. Would
"lowering" the settings to VGA values help? How to proceed with the
Bookshelf 94 installation? This computer is being given to a disabled friend
who has no computer experience.

Some very old apps check for 256 colors.
When they were written, 32bit color was unheard of...so yes you may actually
want to* lower* the colors

or look for a newer version of that application

I get the same error when I switch to 32-bit colour, but 16-bit colour
installs OK, except that the installer complains that I have only 4MB
of RAM for one of the components (sorry, I forget which one), which
then prevents this component from installing.
