Compatible Vista combinations to perform remote desktop

I am building my Dad a new PC and want to confirm the vista requirements to
do remote desktop connection. I am intending to do remote support over the
internet when he needs help.

I have Vista Home Premium installed running Aero.

Do I need Vista Enterprise or Ultimate installed on his machine to take
control of his desktop? I've read this on the MS website, but it isn't very
clear:

"You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running
Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Basic N,
or Windows Vista Home Premium. You can, however, connect from those editions
of Windows Vista to computers running other versions of Windows."

I do not need him to take control of my computer.

I've read up on the series of steps I must take to make the connection, I
just would like to confirm the version of Vista before I pay extra for it.

I believe the last one listed is the one you want to connect to, so the
answer is "No". Use VNC or dameware or something else. If it has the word
Home, it will not work as a RDP server. They did this so tech people could
not support the OS, for example in a corporate environment. Bastards.

It's no different than XP Home... which also -did not- act as an RDP server.

Use the free version at http://www.logmein.com -- works like a champ. I do
my wife and son's machines (upstairs and my handicap prevents me from going
up there), my father-in-law's machine in NY (I'm in GA), and a few other
remote machines. Better than RDP, IMHO.

logmein is the best thing around for Remote, accessable anywhere runs
like a champ and if you buy the full version can even file transfer
using it.

Sorry for the clairification...
PC #1 is built - has Vista Home Premium installed - I use this one
PC #2 is not built - intending to put Vista on it, but which version is
depends on requirement to do remote administration - Dad uses this one.

As far as I understand, when I want to do remote administration of PC#2 from
PC #1, that would make PC#2 the server and PC #1 the client.

If that is true, then according to crappy the MS documentation:
"You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running
Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Basic N,
or Windows Vista Home Premium. You can, however, connect from those editions
of Windows Vista to computers running other versions of Windows."
Then it looks like putting Vista Enterprise or Ultimate on PC#2 would do
the trick.

So the bottom line question is, if I put Vista Premium on PC#2 would I be
capabile of performing remote administration from PC#1?

From your and Ross' replies it sounds like 3rd party software is the better
choice. Which I will pursue if the answer to my bottom line question is
'No'.

I'm running Vista Ultimate. My wife and son are running XP Media Center. My
father-in-law is running XP-Pro, my brother-in-law straight XP, my mother's
boyfriend Vista Home Premium.

I perform remote-admin work on all remote machines, and I'm running
Ultimate, but I did all this from my XP-Po before upgrading, and still do
when required from my dual boot. DSL is highly recommended!

Not with Remote Desktop

I have used Tight VNC & Real VNC to connect to my wife's VHP laptop.
Getting connected is somewhat iffy. I think it's due to the laptop being put
into sleep mode, and the VNC service doesn't resume or restart.
Logmein (free version) seems to do better in that regard, although it takes
a little longer to log into the website, and log into the PC.
