A better question might be legal or illegal, it all depends on what you
want to download. Note that increasingly legal movie distribution, at
least in the UK, is now being made using P2P as this reduces the load on
the movie or TV companies' servers. Personally I find BT useful in that
it allows me to pull down TV shows that I miss for some reason or other
and have forgotten to capture for myself.
If you want to dabble have a look at BitTornado, if more series then
something like Azureus or µTorrent.
