Excessive and inappropriate cookies being injected

What's happening here? How do I stop this from happening?

MS Explorer on Win 98 system collects cookies like crazy even with MV
Host file installed..

Ok. As a test I cleared out all temp and cookies, to BLANK. Cleared
out Recycle Bin. Rebooted. Went to a SINGLE website to view a a tour
for a home. And VOILA! Thousands [well it seemed like thousands] of
cookies with inappropriate URL addresses insinuated themselves right
back again. These are cookies not even associated with the tour. How
is that possible?

As part of this experiment, I didn't go to any of the old URL's but
somehow their cookies pop right back the minute I got back on line.
Is there someway to stop this in the future?

Please don't tell me to delete the HISTORY files in Explorer. I
really need most of that.

There should be some way to alleviate this collecting of cookies.
Although I have to keep cookies open else can't view such tours.
too.

Your other post mentioned that the machine had a previous owner...
looks like it's filled with spyware.
Though you may want to clean it up by using a utility such as Spybot S &
D...
Since who knows what else is on there...I'd make a note of your drivers...
make sure you can either back them up or have a source for them...
then format the machine and perform a clean install

Are you referring to Internet Explorer (IE), is IE6 SP1 installed, and is
the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

was about a Win98SE and this one was simply Win98. But has absolutely
no spyware in it.

Even though I thought you had posted about the same machine...
win98 and win98se are essentially the same OS.

For you to go to just one URL and get "thousands" of cookies
is not normal at all. ( I assume you are actually getting hundreds rather
than thousands)

Though you should of course have all the critical updates that were issued
for win98/se
I'm just curious how you know you have no spyware.

Even on the machines I setup with only minimal security...
on a normal day of heavy browsing I don't get more than 50 cookies or so

1. Set up IE for more rigorous cookie handling

2. Go get a cookie manager such as CookiePal (there are many others)

Thank you everyone for responding.

It turns out this appears to be a one shot problem caused by going to
a website to pick up some real estate pictures, called SHUTTERFLY

It was like the site grabbed the machine, emptied its contents, and
then gave it back after killing IE6 SP1 !!

Even after going through and clearly EVERY cookie and ALL temp files
of every form, we saw cookies come in from sites not visited that day,
that's why I posted the question. However, after clearing multiple
times, rebooting, and clearing and rebooting have not seen it happen
again.

Don't know whtat happened. Perhaps, some of these 'free' websites
providing a nice service aren't so free and aren't so nice.
