How *much* of SP3 will download form WU?

T

Tony Meloche

If you are "up-to-date" on all patches, hotfixes, etc. since SP2, will
only a small part of SP3 download to your machine from Windows Update?
I know that SP3 is 95% or more all the patches and hotfixes since SP2.

Thanks!

Tony

As it has always done before - yes.
Even if you download the standalone patch and install with it - it only
installs what you do not have.

About 65mb on a fully up-to-date system.

And according to Microsoft you only need a 233 mhz processor, 64 mb RAM
and 900 mb available disk space during installation <G>.

What does that have to do with it? My own experience with SP3 final with
up-to-date copies of XP SP2 is 65mb. That is consistent with reports of
others throughout the beta and RC phases as well.

I was only quoting official advice and it was meant to be amusing.
Obvious you did not see the funny side in that in 2008 Microsoft still
feel the need to stick with what was questionable advice in 2001.

It was never meant to be "advice." It was always meant as a simple
statement of the minimum configuration required for XP to run at all.
That minimum, and the minimum required for what someone would consider
adequate performance have always been two very different things, not
just in Windows XP, but in all versions of Windows.

Over and above its not being advice, what configuration is required
for adequate performance can vary enormously, depending on what the
individual uses his computer for and what his expectations of
performance are. For example, my wife ran XP for years on a 256MB
400MHz Pentium II. Although many people would consider performance on
such a configuration terrible, it met her light needs (light word
processing, E-mail, occasional web browsing) very well, and she
continually declined my efforts to upgrade her. She now runs XP on a
512MB 1.6MHz machine (she got my old one when I got a new one).
Considering her light use, she sees no real improvement in
performance.

I see. I guess I just am weary of extraneous advice in here and just
reacted. Sorry about that.

There is a big difference between:

64 mb and 256 mb -multiplier 4

233 mhz. and 400 mhz -multiplier 1.72

The load imposed pre SP1 and pre SP3. -multiplier ???

Haven't you noticed <G>?

Ouch. Was hoping it would be a little smaller than that. There are
still areas where one cannot get any type of high-speed internet - yet -
and I live in one of them. But a friend has offered to put it on CD for
me if I wish, and I would like to have the back up. That will be within
days of the final release. But if the extras other than "fully updated"
had come to only about 12-14 Mb, I would have gotten it tomorrow. 65 MB
is about four hours download on my connection.

Every provider has told us: "It will be there soon!", or "High speed
access is coming your way, we just haven't gotten out there yet!", etc. etc.
