IE 6 is freezing on me

R

Richard

Dell Optiplex GX260 - Win 2K, sp4: I suspect the last or the before last
Black Tuesday Windows update did this to my computer because it never did
this before (I had this computer for 5 years now). Can someone confirm this
and if so, tell me which update I will remove? Note: It does not freeze all
the time, let's say once or twice per session.

Thank you all in advance

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Cumulative Security Updates for IE are seldom responsible for such behavior,
Richard. If uninstalling the most recent IE update (KB947864) via
Add/Remove Programs resolves the behavior (doubtful), either it wasn't
installed properly in the first place or something's gone awry in Windows
(not IE).

I would NOT recommend connecting the machine to the internet without IE and
Windows being fully patched!

Thanks PA, AV is Symantec Corporate and for anti-spyware is Zone Alarm Pro.
This week end I ran AdAware and Spybot fully updated in safe mode - found
nothing. Other than IE 6 freezing once in a while, everything behaves
normally. I will remove KB947864 just to make sure M$ didn't screw it up. If
I still get the problem afterwards, I will reinstall it.

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help [HINT!], try the
following:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by
an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender includes Spybot
Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), *disable any
third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall*.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing reading email chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus
application has been re-enabled!

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB947864)"
via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right)
and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates
offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional Updates
category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of IE7's
additional security.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party
firewall.

You do NOT want to use your computer online without KB947864 installed!

Thanks PA again, but I'm running Win 2000 sp4 not XP, and IE 6. All KB's you
mentionned are related to XP, which is not the case here. One thing I could
add though, is when I do crtl>alt >delete, I get a gray back ground with a
graphic that looks like an old MS-DOS screen ( A face with an old gray
graphic) . Otherwise, everything else looks normal. Thanks again, Richard

My bad. The above should have been edited and the following posted instead:

"4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical
Updates offered."

Otherwise, everything in my last reply pertains to Win2K SP4.
