Possible to put my SP3 download on my wife's computer?

T

Tony Meloche

My wife and I both have dial-up (high speed internet is not yet
available in our area - soon, we hope) and I downloaded SP3 and
installed this morning. Took about 3 hours, 20 minutes. No problems at
all. But is there a file/files on my machine now that constitute the
installation package that I can put on a flash drive, put on her
computer and execute?

Many thanks!

Tony

You can download SP3 in a file that can be burned to a cd and then used on
your wife's computer.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CE-B5FB-4488-8C50-FE22559D164E&displaylang=en

When you upgrade using Windows Update only the files needed for the computer
being upgraded are downloaded so if your system was reasonably up to date
you would only have needed around 70mb of the total 316mb available on WU.
Also, the upgrade process on WU writes changes to your OS in addition to any
updates. These changes can only be done by WU or the SP3 installer
contained in the standalone package.

Through Windows Update - it only downloaded about 42 MB when it said
"Done!" and asked to install. I did, and everything went well - but it
obviously only downloaded what I needed. Colin Barnhorst explained in
another response that to get what I wanted, I'd have to download the
whole installation package - which that download page says is 22 hours
on my connection. Fortunately, I have a friend I can ask to download it
for me (he has DSL), though that will be a few days yet. But between
you and Colin, you answered my question, an I am grateful - thanks.

Thanks, Colin - but that would be 22 hours on my connection. Not an
option :>) But I have a friend who offered to put the .iso on a CD for
me, though that will be a week or so yet - but it seems to be my best
bet. Thanks for your answer!

Why not just update the other computer through WU ? It seems to me that 3 hours,
20 minutes is not that long compared to the alternatives.. :) Or, take the other
computer to some place that has broadband and connect and update..:)

If you downloaded the big file then yes you can save/copy it on your
flash drive and use it to update any other machines using that is
running Windows XP.

Then the answer is no, you cannot use what you downloaded to install SP3 on
DW's PC.
