Dual Boot worry

Hello,,,
I am pasting a post here that I made in xp general..... (I have never cross posted in my life, and
dont wish to start now, so will copy/paste as the problem I have relates to both win98 and xp.)

"I have developed a problem with my dual boot system. I have win98 and xp,, win98 being on the
c:
drive, and xp on the d drive.
I switched to xp today after a reboot, all seemed okay as it went through the normal motions, then
it produced a screen as if xp had been installed for the first time then just ceased up.
I havent used xp a great deal, and it doesnt have access to the internet.
When I open win' explorer, (via booting back to win98) it shows my D: drive with all of the things
that are loaded into xp, including all new folders and stuff that I created last time I was there.
(oh, xp was loaded on using fat32, and has been that way for over a year without a problem.)

So, one of my main concerns right now is the fact that xp is the boot manager for the dual-boot, and
I sure as heck dont want to lose the ability to boot into win98.

I have heard that there is a repair tool on my xp disc, and was wondering whether I should try to
use that? I also dont have my product key anymore. I downloaded 'magicjellybean' product key
finder, and saved it to a file in win98, then from there created a folder on xp (d: drive) and
copied it into there,, but realised that I was still in a 98 environment and hence couldnt fire
it up to find xp's product number..... still, I dont even know if I need that at this stage
because I have the original disc anyway.

Can anyone advise on what I should do, or better still, what any of you here would do in the same
situation? Basically, I havent really tried anything yet, thought I would come here first.

Have run all the obvious antivirus and malaware programs, comes up clean for win98.

It would help US a LOT if you were to properly cross-post. Here, I just did
it for you. Now you just pick one group to read and all of the posts from
both groups to your thread will appear there. I have no advice to offer,
because I'm 99.9999% certain that this is an XP problem and the issue should
be left up to XP experts. While you might find an XP expert in here by
chance who knows what's what, it would be by pure chance. Don't think you're
going to get much help here at all. I STRONGLY suggest you leave the
cross-posting in place, so that when someone from the 98 group valiantly
tries to help and fails miserably, the nice folks over in XP land can make
the proper corrections.

Next time you bootup select WinXP and immediately tap the F8 button.
Hopefully it
will give you a menu. Choose Safe Mode and if XP boots up try a System
Restore.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
Sounds like you have the OS's on separate drives. Since the bootloader
is on the C:
drive there's no worry of not booting into Win98. You can format the D:
Drive and still
boot into Win98.

How does one determine, for sure, where the boot manager is located? Is that
SOP for Windows XP Setup? To put the boot manager on the pre-existing OS
partition?

(I never let XP set up any boot manager. I use third-party solutions, with a
separate boot partition and OS partitions never see each other.)

For Windows XP, the default boot manager always resides on the active
primary partition...
So though XP itself may be installed on any partition ...
the so called "boot files" will always reside on the C: drive


The three files needed for booting are:
ntldr
ntdetect.com
boot.ini


Boot.ini is the file used to assign the boot path,
in this case Win98 and XP...

So if one just begins the boot to XP
and immediately hits F8,
the option to boot to safe mode should appear.


The boot loader itself is Ok...
and presumably...the win98 installation is Ok...
so the problem itself is with XP .

Booting to safe mode and performing a system restore to a time prior to the
problem
could solve the issue...unless it was simply an issue of logging on the
wrong profile...
but again...that's an XP issue and it would be appropriate to continue
questioning
on an XP group.
