netgear FA310 trouble..............

Hello, I have a win 98 se computer .It was working ,but a little slow.
So I
ran the internet repair program. Now I can't get the modem to ' talk' to
the
computer. It's a high speed (10 mbps) modem.I have to limit it to 10
mbps, or
the internet will switch off, as the building internet guy has it set
up that
way. Now the modem doesn't even have the one led that used to signify a
signal. i've tried re installing it and entering the parameters again
with no
results. It is a Netgear FA 310 modem.I've tried for hours to get it
going
again with no luck. Any help is appreciated.

A general rule: if it used to work and now it doesn't, it's probably a
software error. With Internet access, it is slightly different. As long
as
you didn't mess with your connection configuration, and as long as you
have
paid your bill, you should still have access.

It may be worth checking with your ISP to see if there is a reason you
don't
have access. If they don't report a problem, try completely
uninstalling
your router or modem and all your internet accounts in Windows, then
reinstall and configure. If that doesn't work, your modem may be
broken.
Borrow a similar modem from someone else if you can, and test it on
your
computer. If it works then your modem is broken, if it doesn't then you
have
a more serious software error probably caused by a virus.

If the latter is the case, you may want to back up your personal files
to
CD, wipe your hard drive by deleting your primary partition, creating a
new
one, formatting and reinstall Windows. This is the last resort. Only
reinstall if you know for a fact you are using a modem that works for
someone else with the same connection type. It may seem a little
extreme to
reinstall Windows, but trust me it is faster than diagnosing and fixing
a
software error of this sort. Hope this helps, sir.

jstich:

The Netgear FA310 is a network card (NIC) not a modem. Try the
troubleshooting link here.

I think you meant "net card" not modem.

Try booting to safe mode and deleteing all instances of Network
adaptors

then reboot and install the correct drivers
