desktop with windows 98 cant connect to cable internet

I got a compaq presario computer for my daughter that has win 98 on it.
I'm
not able to get the cable internet working on it I have a usb cord
running
from the cable modem to the tower of pc but can't open any IE pages.
Any
help???
