Patches installing during shutdown

I've had a couple times when I tried to shut down but Windows said it
had to install updates and then shutdown. Which it did okay.

I'm confused what the setup has to do with this. If you have
Automatic Updates on, it could be fully automatic or it could be
"Notify but don't install right away." Do these two settings have to
do with whether or not it will install during shutdown?

If it is fully automatic, you can also set a time, and I think the
time selected can cause Windows to update during shutdown.

I guess the general rule is that if you've downloaded an update but it
hasn't installed, and you shut down, then it will offer to update and
shut down. But I thought it would prompt or notify me as soon as it
was downloaded and ready to install.

Each setting has it's own behavior.

1) Automatic (recommended) - updates download and install automatically

2) Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them -
after the updates have been downloaded you *should* be notified and you
*should* be able to Approve the immediate installation of downloads

3) Notify me but don't automatically download or install them - you have
to Approve the download and then Approve their installation

For 2 and 3, if the updates were not Approved for installation, there
will be another Shutdown option if one chooses to shutdown ...
Shutdown and Install Updates. There is another option to Shut Down
[without installing updates] that *should* be listed.
