MS Config Startup List

Where in the registry do I go to remove an entry from the Startup list for
msconfig? I've already deleted the program.

I should have also stated I've already checked the HKLM run keys and the
program isn't listed there.

Run MSINFO32, look in the Software section, Startup Programs, and find the
appropriate entry or entries. What's it say in the "Loaded from..." column?

"Startup Group" = Start>Programs>Startup folder shortcut.
"Registry (Machine Run)" =
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
"Registry (Machine Service)" =
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

Why did you "delete" the program instead of uninstalling it properly?
Uninstalling properly should have removed the startup entry. Not
uninstalling properly probably left a LOT of crap behind and you should
reinstall and then uninstall properly.

I forgot some items in my previous:

Registry (Per User Run) = HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
WIN.INI: Load= or Run= lines. (forget how that looks in MSINFO32

Why not run a search for the file (exe) (within the registry). I know
it's a bit time consuming, but it's bound to be found. (I'm pretty used to
it)

If you have an item in "MSConfig, Startup tab" duplicated, but one is
checked & the other(s) are not, check them all & click "Apply, OK". It
will ask that you reboot. Answer "No". You will be left with just one,
if they were true duplicates. "Then you should either uninstall the
programs you don't want loaded or use their setup/config programs to
disable the parts you don't want loaded", says Richard G. Harper (MVP
MPS-D). But if it doesn't work (it only works for the ones in the
Registry), or you have an unchecked one without a duplicate, then...

MSConfig keeps it in Startup, just in case you want to check it again.
It has not been loaded to run, as Ctrl-Alt-Del shows. It has been moved
to a Minus (-) Key in the Registry. To remove it from the Registry, you
may navigate to the Key, and delete the entry under it. That will also
remove it from MSConfig Startup, where you will no longer be able to
check it. It's probably under one of these Keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
-
^... That minus sign wrapped away from "RunServices-".

Also here:
"C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items"
"START, Run, Win.ini". Delete any 'norun' entries under the [Windows]
section.

You would navigate to each key, by clicking the plus signs in the left
pane. When you see "Run-", click it and look in the right pane, for what
looks like the one your looking for. R-Clk it in the right pane and
select "delete". However, first: "Registry menu, Export Registry File".
This will create a .reg file of that Minus Key, which you may run (by
clicking) to undo the delete you are about to do. All of that can more
easily be done with
http://www.pcmag.com/ ' RegEdit+, which has a customizable "Favorites"
list, which includes those Minus Keys. It also has automatic "undo".
Registry Detective is another worthy program freely downloadable there.
StartupCop may really be what you need, also there.

Watch out, keep the LoadPowerProfiles, and, I guess, any virus scanner
duplicates.

Thanks. I reviewed these and the program wasn't there. I think the best
solution is what was proposed in these responses, to check the box in the
Startup group, reboot, and then delete and reinstall the program. The only
thing keeping me from doing this is that it's a program called Anapod
Explorer which my daughter uses with her IPod. Gotta check with her first
before I make these changes. If she loses access to her tunes--she'll kill
me!

Thanks, Bill. I found some instances of it, but I'm reluctant to remove any
of them since removing the file might affect the program itself. And see my
response to Gary of the possible dire consequences of this action.

PCR, you are always so dependable in responding with comprehensive
information, even if I'm already familar with it. You're always a joy to
work with. BTW, check out a program called Registry Crawler. I've been using
it for years. Can't remember whether it's freeware or shareware.

Well, yeah, if the item is UNchecked in MSCONFIG, the items get moved to
different places. Run & RunServices key items get moved to Run- and
RunServices- keys, Startup Group items get moved to a folder called Disabled
Startup Items folder. WIN.INI items are simply commented out.

Have you considered looking up any Help for Anapod?

Unfortunately, they want you to sign in before they'll even let you read the
damned Help!! But if they're worth a damn, they'll tell you how to
uninstall, what to do with her Tunes, etc. I don't know jack about iPODs or
any of that other stuff. Last thing I want is things stuffed in my ears. And
I have all the music I could possibly want.

You should note that Anapod has had some Anti-virus/Anti-SpyWare programs

| PCR, you are always so dependable in responding with comprehensive
| information, even if I'm already familar with it. You're always a joy
to
| work with.

Thanks. So... did you find the item & delete it? If it is still checked
in MSConfig, Startup tab, uncheck it to get it into a minus key or one
of the other locations. Then, go hunt for it again where me 'n Terhune
said.

| BTW, check out a program called Registry Crawler. I've been using
| it for years. Can't remember whether it's freeware or shareware.

I seems to have a "free personal version" as well as one you may pay
for. I used Jouni Vuorio's RegCleaner once long ago-- after owning &
fearing it for a year! Nothing bad happened, though some keys did return
to my Registry on their own. But since then I nevertheless have sworn
never to do it again! Most MVPs will hunt you down if you do it twice!

I can't login either because I refuse to register software or anything else
that I buy. Apod has a tech support FAQ that anyone can access but doesn't
cover the issue. However, I know how to fix the problem now.

Actually I did delete it properly. The problem was that I had it unchecked
from the startup group in msconfig and should have put a check in the box
before the uninstall. I'll put in this extra step if I have to delete it
again.

This is a purchased version--$24.95. iTunes isn't compatible with Win98 SE
(who knew?) so we had to go the Anapod route. When you pay $200 for an iPod
for your daughter she needs to be able to transfer mp3s from the hard drive
and Anapod was the best game in town.

Yep, gotta keep em happy.

Keep it updated, and monitored as well as you can [sitewise] Though that
will likely be difficult as the best "free" songs and stuff are on the very
sites that need monitored the most, or avoided...

A matter of important semantics: You DO NOT delete installed programs in
Windows. You uninstall them. You're going to get the same warning any time
you say, "I deleted a program".
