Uninstalling AVG Anti-Virus

C

Colin Williams

I have been a long term user of AVG Anti-Virus. However, with version 7.5
about to expire and 8.0 not available to W98, I decided to uninstall it
and replace it with Avast.

However, having run the uninstall, I was left with various folders
(Program Files\Grisoft and Windows\All Users\Application Data\ Grisoft &
AVG) which I have since moved off the machine.

Now, during the boot up process, I get the message that the registry or
System.ini file refers to device files which no longer exist. These are:-
C:\PROGRA'1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE'1\AVG7CORE.VXD
C:\PROGRA'1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE'1\AVG7RS.VXD
C:\PROGRA'1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE'1\AVG7DI.VXD

I cannot see any reference to these in the system.ini file, so I would be
very grateful for any help in sorting this out.

Kind Regards,
Swan

Did you uninstall AVG via Add/Remove Programs?

According to the following from Grisoft, if there are problems with
uninstalling, you're supposed to run Setup file again, and one of the Setup
options is to Uninstall. If you have the installer, still, that would be a
good idea. I don't see where you can download it anymore.

To find out if those entries are in the Registry, go to the Start>Run box
and run the following:
SCANREG /backup (to make sure there's a fresh one, then run:
REGEDIT
Use the Edit>Find function to search on AVG7 (it's a simple string search,
so no "wild cards".) However, I'm leery of simply removing those entries for
fear that they are only part of a larger set of entries. You may just get
another set of errors. I'd go with trying the Uninstall again using the
Setup file, and I should recommend that you use a "Clean Boot" when
installing/uninstalling applications. You'd be surprised how much it can
help.

Hi Gary,

Thanks very much for your very useful answer. I shall study the
information carefully.

Incidentally, I did uninstall via add/remove. I also visited Grisoft
forums where it was suggested that I remove the remaining folders
which I mentioned. My system is running perfectly apart from the boot
up, so I will look into your suggestions.

Once again, many thanks for your prompt help.

Regards,
Swan

Thing is, I don't know that finding and removing those VXD entries from
wherever they are stored is going to fix things, or perhaps make things
worse. If you find them in the Registry, use File >Export to save a copy of
the entries so you can put them back if it seems like a good idea.
