KeepAliveTime parameter in the registry

Can someone please help me understand the KeepAliveTime and KeepAliveInterval
parameters that can be added to the registry of a W2K3 Server
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters ??

We have an FTP server in which some connections are being closed after 2
hours. In doing research on the FTP software, we are being told to add the
KeepAliveTime parameter to the registry to resolve the issue. I need help in
understanding what this does.
