Help requested RE: problem with uxtheme.dll

I am running XP Home, SP3.

I am having a repetitive problem at shutdown that shows up in Event
Viewer as follows:

Faulting application, version 0.0.0.0. faulting module uxtheme.dll
version 6.0.2900.5512. fault address 0x000011f5.

Help and Support Center merely tells me that they haven't any info
regarding that specific problem.

There are four copies of uxtheme.dll on my computer. The two from
the i386 and $NTservicePackUninstall$ folders are version 6.0.2900.2180.

The two from the Windows\System32 and Windows\servicepackfiles\i386
folders are version are 6.0.2900.5512 (evidently a more recent version.

The message indicates the problem is with the newer version. It is a
signed Microsoft file, but is still identified as "unknown application"
on the properties sheet.

Can anyone help with this? Thank you!

A complete copy of the Error Report from Event Viewer would help.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You need to identify the Application. You could try Process Monitor.

Unfortunately there is nothing in the Event Viewer Report that gives an
obvious clue.

Have you customised a Theme? This mysterious application I would imagine
relates to something like this but it is not something I know much
about.

Start, Control Panel, Display, Themes is one place to start. Did the
problem exist before installing SP3?

Not this specific problem, no. I had a similar problem (only occurred
on shutdown) that I traced eventually to a screen saver I've used for
years - but started giving me trouble. Out it went. This is a new
problem, and yes, it is since I installed SP3. I wonder if replacing
the two older version with the newer version of the file (or
vice-versa!) would cure it?

The only version of uxtheme,dll currently in use in the one the the
system32 folder. The other new copy is a backup file and the two older
files are if you wish to uninstall SP3. Tinkering with these files is
not the answer. The problem lies with the unnamed application /
programme using uxtheme.dll.

Are there any other Error Reports currently appearing in Event Viewer?

Nope, just that one. Adnd I appreciate the continuing interest you are
taking in this Gerry. We may not solve it, but fortunately it doesn't
affect the operation of my computer in any other way.
