Install NT OS on a XP OS

L

limas serafim

I have an application software for spectral image acquisition that was
developped for NT OS and a MV 1000 Mutech frame grabber. I would like to
install this software and board in my PC that has a XP operating system. I
would like to do it in a safe manner (without losing my PC content). How can
I do it?

I would think that the best thing to do would be to contact the
manufacturer and ask them if the software & hardware works with XP or if
they have updated drivers/software for it.

Thanks. The manufacturer of the software did not develop any version for XP.
It a small enterprise. Even to have the referred software working properly
with NP it was hard to succeed. This is the reason to wish install NP4 on the
XP machine and so establish the initial condition. The software is now
working properly on a NP4 machine but this PC is not efficiently used.
Do you think it's risky operation? Is there any methodology for this
installation or is it not recommended at all?

The safest and easiest way to do it would be to put another hard drive
in the computer and install NT4 on it. To eliminate the risk of errors
and damage to the XP installation you can temporarily pull the power
connector from the XP drive while you install NT.

I did as you said: pull out power from XP hard disk and power up a NTSC
formated hard disk with 2 partitions, 2 GB and 8 GB. I tried installation
with a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 CD, 'for distribution only with a new PC'.
It happened that PC didn't install the NT OP warning that 'NTLDR is missing'.
As I failed the installation this way, I followed another with SETUP Boot
diskettes (3 setup disks) and the evolution was positive until the moment the
PC ask for insert the OS NT4 CD (after the 3rd disk). It happened that PC did
not read CD. I dont know what is happening. I have a dvd reader but this is
not the problem.
Note: When XP is running and and I introduce NT4.0 OP in dvd reader PC ask
me for installing this OP. It seems that something is missing when I try to
install NT from zero OP.
Do you have any way to solve this problem?
Thanks again!

I'm not sure what you call an "NTSC formated hard disk". The NT 4.0 cds
were bootable. To install you should be able to boot with the CD and at
the disk/partition selection screen you can create a 2GB FAT16 partition
and install NT on it. Make sure that the computer is set to boot to the
CD-ROM drive before the hard drive.

Please note that if your computer is newer you may have to press S at
the beginning of the installation and supply controller drivers on a
floppy diskette.

Hi!,
This NT 4.0 OS is in fact special because I remember a few ago that I needed
3 diskettes to install it. When I try now to install it as if it was a
bootable CD I have the message: 'NTLDR is Missing'.
If I install by diskettes all is well untill the moment the PC ask me to put
the NT OS CD on the tray (after running the 3rd diskette). It happens then
that the CD is not recognized as the OS. I dont remember to have such
installation problems in the past (7 years ago) with other PC in my lab,
except the limitations with disk partitions that gave me a headacke.
Starting with XP OS, if put the NT OS CD in the tray, PC recognizes the OS
and gives the message: 'NT 4.0 Starts Here is not setup to run on this
machine' and a windows is open with options ( run and quit). I quit.
I have other PC running NT 4.0 installed with CD from the start. Do you see
any reason for this behaviour?
Thanks!

You can try it from a flat folder on the hard disk.

The partition must be FAT, NT4 cannot read, use or be installed on
FAT32. Boot the computer with a DOS 6.22 diskette (available here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm ). Use fdisk and create a 2GB
primary partition at the *beginning* of the hard disk, this is
important, NT4.0 uses Int-13 BIOS functions to boot and the System
Partition must reside within the first 1024 cylinders of drive 0, it
cannot extend beyond 7.8GB. Set the partition active and format it
FAT16. Create an i386 folder ( md ) on C: and copy the I386 folder from
the CD to the i386 folder on C. Navigate to the folder on C and run
winnt from its location. When asked or prompted for the location to
copy the files "FROM" use the i386 folder on C: not the CD. For a
floppyless install use the /b switch, WINNT /B.

John

PS: Make sure that the hard disk is at position 0 on the controller.
