Are you infected with spyware? It sounds possible.
Get a copy if "hijack this" post the test results on here.
Set your homepage to BLANK.
Get rid of Avast. I had trouble with that POS too.
Get AVG. Its free adn works pretty well.
DISABLE AVAST for the moment. Go to STARTUP, disable all references
to Avast. Reboot, then try this all over again.
I hope you know if you buy a NEW computer, you wont be able to run
Win98 on it. It will come with Vista (you dont want vista).
For awhile you could get a new computer with XP, I am not sure if they
are still doing that. I personally dont want XP either. Win98 is
where I stop. WinME was the same as Win98 with a few additions but
more bugs. Win2K was tolerable, but not to my liking. XP is
garbage, and Vista is a disaster.
Since you posted this message you ARE online, right?
You just cant get IE to work. Have you installed Firefox?
Brt you'll like it better and its free.
DO NOT POST HiJackThis RESULTS HERE! There are forums dedicated to the
analysis of HJT logs and those are the places to post HJT logs. Where people
like "letterman", who know zilch about analyzing HJT logs, can't gum up the
works. You post the log and truly knowledgeable people analyze it, with no
ill-advised (and just plain wrong) comments from the peanut gallery. OP has
bad enough problems already.
Please explain how one should obtain AVG, HJT, even FF, without being able
to go online with the existing browser.
Your "opinions", especially of the various OSes, are clearly those of an
ignorant fool.

I can only send and receive e-mail since I didn't let AVAST handle my e-mails from
the beginning. But I can not click on any links and get online. I have firefox on my
desktop but I can not get anything but "this page can not be displayed" or a time out

more. Avast has be removed with their removal tool, in safe mode with add/remove
programs with and without safe mode at least 20 times. Avast does not answer my
e-mails. I don't have Avast on my computer but it is in my browsers. Ginny

What is back is a ball with a spyglass (ball is Avast icon) at the bottom of my IE
page next to the numbers of my home page, the whole rest of the page including the
'go to' line are blank. Eventually I get an error message. I cannot get online!!!!

This is AFTER uninstalling Avast!? If Avast is installed (and you might want
to go ahead and do that again) there should be two blue balls in the System
Tray (where the clock is). Right-click the one with an "a" on it and pause
all providers. Does that fix it? (I'd wait to reinstall Avast until after
running the cleanup tool, and when installing again, BE SURE to uncheck the
option that has it do a full scan after restarting.

Thank you everyone. I fixed it by downloading it.....(I tried to update it but it
didn't work)...when I downloaded it this time I let it handle my mail.....then I went
into safe mode and removed it with Avast's removal tool. I seem to be back to normal.
I still can't run the IE6 repair tool ...it still tells me I am missing those 3
files. But so far so good. Thanks again for your patience.

If your IE6 is damaged and cannot be repaired
try uninstalling it completely
reboot
then reinstall.

Yea. As to CdLSRN's problem, I'm being to recall a possibility may
involve avast! &/or IE/OE settings. I'll post it to him shortly, as more
of it comes back to me. It wasn't a pleasant experience! Yes-- I'm
beginning to remember it well! However, it wasn't the NET that was
disturbed (I still could click URLs)-- it was just E-Mail & NG access
that became impossible. (Well, may as well post it, anyhow.)

I'm glad to see that part is solved. I was about to post something, but
really it involved the opposite of your symptoms-- once, I could access
the NET, but not E-Mail & NGs. Now, all is working well, though. (I
never was perfectly sure it was avast! at fault.)
Since you now know how to recover from the problem you had, you might
try avast! again. I'm really very pleased with it, despite its few
peccadilloes.
| I still can't run

What 3 files? When the IE Repair tool won't run, an over-install of IE
is the cure. I see you have IE6 installed. So...
Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).
(a) "START button, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General
tab & disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.."
& unchecking "Load Startup...". Reboot.
(b) Perhaps, "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end task all but Explorer & Systray.
If this goes badly, start again from top, & skip it next time.
(c) "START button, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe".
Click it in the Find window. If there is more than one (I have
two), click the one in...
"C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files", or
"C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.
(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a).
(e) Reboot.
(f) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.

Can you Right click the IE icon on the desktop, click Properties in the popup
menu and check under the General tab what your homepage is set to? Reading
back, you mentioned that any attempt to connect to the internet resulted in the
connection being directed at IP: 66.135.200.145. You also mentioned that this
was the address for Avast, which it is not, it is an IP address for Ebay.
You best run a thorough system check with the proper
tools/utilities/applications to make sure your system hasn't been compromised.

eBay used to be my home page....now it is optonline and the numbers at the bottom
have changed, but I go nowhere. I am not quite sure what I am supposed to do,
......how do I do a system check and what am I looking for?
The three files that are missing are MSXML.DLL, MSXMLA.DLL, AND MSXMLR.DLL.
fILES THAT i DO have are MSXML3.DLL, MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML4.DLL, MSXML4A.DLL,
MSXML4R.DLL. I was wondering if other people had these files and if someone had put
numbers in the files ie: missing MSXML.DLL......haveMSXML3.DLL.

I told you to set your homepage to BLANK. (No homepage).
Try that and see if that helps. You dont need to have a homepage.
You can always type in what you want, or later *after things are
fixed* you can put ebay back.
You can go to a friends house and download the installer for IE6.
Copy it to something and run the install when you get home. I keep
the entire Win98 CD files on my harddrive, as well as IE6 install
files and all my drivers and such. That way you dont have to rely on
going online to fix stuff.
Hope this helps
Good luck

By the way, I use IE6 under win98se. I searched for MSXML.... Numbers
you listed.
I DO NOT have the ones ending in 4 and 4a. I DO have the ones ending
with the 3 or 3a.
You might try renaming MSXML4.DLL to MSXML.DLL
See if that helps. Just remember what you did so if it dont work you
can put it back the way it was.
These should be in Windows/System
You might find the same files in Windows/Vcm
