Dual Boot 2 sperate hard drives, both running Windows98 SE

Hello,

I have 2 separate WD 80GB hard drives, each partitioned once installed in
my PC. Both have Windows98 SE installed. Can I have a menu come up on
starting up my PC to pick which drive I want to boot to? If I can do this,
which file do I have to update and what do I write? The first drive is C &
the second drive is D.

What you want is a dual-boot manager, and none is included in Windows 98.
You need to use a third-party tool like BootIt NG. www.bootitng.com $30 last
I looked.

Hi Gary,

Thank you for replying to my question. Doesn't Windows 98 have a file that
can be updated like in XP? I know in XP you just add a line in the boot.ini
file. Does windows 98 have a file like that? I hate to spend $30 for
software just to be able to dual boot win98. Especially since I am
permanently disabled and living on disability income.

No, Windows 98 does not have a boot manager -- in other words, no it doesn't
have any of those files. I don't know of any free boot manager that I can
recommend. I'm sure there are some out there, but I'm not familiar with
them. Partition Magic is another popular app, but it costs even more than
BING. Just make sure you have located a good, responsive support forum for
whatever boot manager you decide to use, BEFORE you actually install it.

I saw that when I Googled. Have you used it? It looks stable, but apparently
has only one person for support. Is it something you'd recommend? Is it
something you'd recommend to someone who has two existing Windows
installations to protect and obviously doesn't know the first thing about
partitions, dual-booting, etc.?

Hi Gary,

I would deeply appreciate anything you could tell me that would help me
make dual booting win98 easier.

I seen your other posting to Philo. LOL I know something about
partitioning. I knew each of the 2 drives on this win98 computer only have
one partition each. I removed a partition from my Desktop computer that had
the Operating Recovery files on it. I also set my desktop PC up with 2 hard
drives dual booting Windows XP & Vista. Of course Vista did all the work on
that for me.

I am one of those people that know enough to be very dangerous, but not
enough to be helpful. LOL

No.

An alternative to a boot manager is to change the drive boot order in your
BIOS whenever you want to switch drives. What are you trying to accomplish
by having Win98 separately installed on different drives?

Download the ZIP file and unpack it into a new folder. Run BOOTITNG.EXE to
make a bootable floppy or CD for installation. Boot to the new disc, but
when you get the prompt to install, Cancel that prompt. That will drop you
into Maintenance Mode where you can click on Partition Work. You want to go
in and make a tiny partition just for the boot manager. That way if you
later need to reformat that main partition, you'll still have your boot
manager. To do this, use Resize to shrink the existing partition by 32 MB.
Then restart the system and proceed to install it. Let BING choose the
installation partition when asked where to install to. It will make it's own
in the free space you created. Once it's installed and you've rebooted,
etc., then you can go back and resize the main partition again to reclaim
what's still empty, since BING will only use ~8MB.

After that, you want to consider things like whether to hide the two systems
from each other, learn to use the boot menu, etc. But it sets you up with
some easy defaults to use until you've had time to read up, or ask further
questions here or in the BING forum.

Hi Gary,

Can I please trouble you with a bigger problem I am having? I read on other
threads that McAfee takes up too much resources in Win98 SE. So I removed it
from the computer to add a different anti-virus software. I used Windows
Remove program in control panel to do it. After the removal was done a
message came up to reboot, which I did. Ever since doing that, including the
first reboot, the computer freezes at the "Microsoft Windows98" window. I
can boot into safe mode every time no problem and I can even boot to normal
mode if I leave the computer off for an hour. I read in another thread to
try ""START, Run, MSConfig" & turn off the Startup Group, Config.sys &
Autoexec.bat. (Note: when you later turn them back on, all items in them
will get checked. So, note what may be unchecked first.)". I did this, but I
still freeze at the Win98 Window. That other thread goes on what to do if
you boot successfully, but does not say what to do next if it does not boot.

I am sorry to ask, but can you help me out from here? I sure would
appreciate it.

I had used it at one time a while back
and since it can hide a primary partitions think that it should work.


Is it as good as B I N G ???

Boot managers are great for what you're referring to. I use one myself.

Another option is to put both hard drives in removable enclosures. Just
insert the one you want to boot from.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for replying to my question and for your suggestions. I like your
ideal with the removable trays the best. I use to have 2 of them before. One
for my computer and one for my daughter's computer. I used them to pass
files back and forth between the 2 computers before getting a network setup.
I didn't even give them a thought, thanks again. I believe I still have one
of them. The other one the wires got pulled off the connections on the
inside. Guess who did that trick. Anyway one tray is a lot less money then
the boot manager software and the trays could be used to keep the spare
drive safe.
