One day I was talking/complaining with a knowedgeable person about the lack
of zipfile support in win98se. The significant other said, "windows has a
zipfile extraction capability." Where is this located in win98se? Does this
compress files also?

It's no big deal though! Just install WinZip. She must be thinking of
XP. (I won't even mention Vista here (snort).

Why XP? IIRC, Win ME has native zip file support. No need to leave the 9x family
for it. -)

Unless may they were simply thinking about Win98's ability to view and
extract .cab files

This is what I was thinking too, the system file checker extractor. I did
find an Iomeaga handel called USBzip.sys and a USBzip.inf file in the
C:\Windows\System and Inf locations.

Iomega Zip Disk is/was a type of storage device - similar in principle to a
floppy disk, but 100MB (and 750MB - IIRC) in size. It required a further
piece of hardware called a Zip Drive (hence the need for the USBzip.sys and
a USBzip.inf files and other driver files) to run these Zip disks.

The "Zip" in this context has no bearing in 'zipping and unzipping' files
using compression techniques referred to in the subject title.

100 MB and 250 MB (not 750 MB), as I recall. Never got that larger one -
was quite "content" (but that's a qualified content, especially in trying to
access it in DOS, and the driver problems, etc) with the 100 MB size.

But ever since USB flash drives came in, I don't miss the zip drives at all.

I forgot about ME. (I went from 98 to XP (well, I have both), and
bypassed ME.
I guess the one good thing about ME (over 98) was the better USB support.
Otherwise, I kinda think about ME about the same way I think about Vista -
as a "misfit".

Yes Bill, they did do a 750 MB version (not that I ever had one - see
http://www.iomega.com/direct/products/family.jsp?FOLDER<>folder_id=26891285&bmUID=1211830418324)
But I do still (rarely) use my Zip100 USB connected to this XP box. Like
you, I agree, USB flash/pen drives are far more convenient - and an awful
lot cheaper!

OK, I stand corrected. I guess there were at least 3 versions then (100
MB, 250 MB, 750 MB).

Agree with you about Flash drives. And - no moving parts inside, either.

It does?
I never knew that...

I only played with ME briefly. Actually I once considered upgrading
to ME, but many people told me to avoid it because of all the bugs.
That's the only reason I never upgraded. I like Win98. I did not
like Win2k or XP. But I seriously considered going to ME because if
for no other reason, it handles USP devices more easily. Since it
looks like Win98 and works nearly the same, I would have upgraded, if
I had not been told by numerous people to avoid it. I even have a
legal copy of ME.

I installed it on a spare harddrive just for grins. It seemed to work
well for me, but I did not play with it very long.

There is no such in the basic Win98/98SE install. Only the ability to view
the insides of CAB files and extract the contents. A VB developers' Package
and Deployment Wizard (PDW), includes a few more useful CAB file tools,
including the ability to create CAB files, add/remove files, etc.
