Restricred sites zone

J

Jim

Use of the Restricted sites zone to protect against some websites that might
damage the machine is fairly straight forward. However, what about files and
folders that are under study and need to be in a restricted status? One
example that I have seen is in user profiles>cookies that a restricted zone
status has been assigned. This is also question of mine, because I did not
do that zone assignment. So I guess this is a two fold question here.

What visual indication do you have that Cookies are in the Restricted Zone?
Sounds to me like some third-party tool got in there and set that up, but I
can't identify which one it might be. Care to list what anti-malware
applications you have installed? Here's some examples of such apps:

In the status bar bottom right of window border, there is a icon that is
usually a small mycomputer for "windows explorer". If you click on it the
security tab of Internet explorer will open and is typically set to Internet
or local setting. In this one case the user profiles>username>cookies the
setting is restricted not mycomputer. I did not set this.

The original question was that if I want to set a file/folder as a
restricted zone folder on mycomputer, how to do this...

And like I told you, the answer is that some 3rd-party application almost
certainly did it for you, that there is no normal Windows setting that you
can access to do it.

I'm GUESSING that if you want to do it manually, you dig into the Registry
to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zone
Map\Domains. The sub-keys of that Key list Domains and the DWORD value
within the Key denotes the Zone (there are 4, Restricted Zone being 4.) You
simply create a DWORD value, name it with an asterisk, nothing more, and
give it the value 4.

The name of the key needs to be in "domain format". For example: Not
C:\Windows\Cookies, but rather 127.0.0.1/windows/cookies (note the forward
slashes.) I tested using that format and it worked. It put the Cookies
folder into the Restricted Zone. I suspect you could use localhost in place
of 127.0.0.1, but I can't test, because even though I entirely erased the
Key, and rebooted, the folder still remains in the Restricted Zone. At least
that's its logo, which may be lying. Go figure.

In short, if you really want to know how it happened, you have to review ALL
of your protective applications, since any one of them could have done this
trick, I just don't know how to undo it.

No, no-- I didn't mean to say PA suggested to do that! Maybe I'll try
it, myself, to see what happens. I do know that putting sites into that

I'm just saying that it makes sense that it's just an IE6SP1 thing, or
IE6.0, or whatever. But I'd have to install sequential versions of IE to
find out, and I don't want to. I just finished rebuilding the thing and may
rebuild it again this week.

Alright. Well, why not try your stuff in...?...

"Internet Options, Security tab, select Restricted Sites, Sites

Does it go into that Registry key you mentioned?

Tried everything I could think of, there's no obvious way to put any local
folder into the Restricted Zone. As PA intimates, it seems to be one of
those "smoke & mirrors" tricks involving the TIF system. (Cookies are part
of the TIF system.) Like I said, blame fatigue and distractions, I was
totally off-base.

I remember that. Didn't it involve the Cookies/whatever that show up

There seems to be a way if you consider a folder just a file. You write
this file:\\localserver\filename .
I tried this and it is supposed to work according to the prompts there in
the security sites zones. The first time I tried this the web: pathname took
the string. The second time I tried it said the the object was already in a
zone...but Mycomputer"=0" symbol was still in the status bar not
restricted"=4". This is the Internet Options security tab I am referring
too. I have only one [file:] listed in the restricted zone and that is some
file:/// concerning Webroot and SpySweeper that must be going out on the
Internet. Anyway, try that and see what happens. I a did a repair today on
MSIEv.6 because I am having some problems in security zones. I tried the
Zonedout software from Spywarrior's restricted sites by E.Howes, and have
used Spybot S&D immunization, these maybe the culpret causing problem with
zones.

The software here by MS should have been straight forward like the above
examples. Even allowing the user to simply click the symbol to change the
zone of the current file/folder in windows explorer, not just IE.

I think my last post was right. It was done by some version of IE and not
via the Restricted Zone. As for what MS *should* have done, it's not a topic
I'm all that interested in. What they did in this case was to release a
version of Windows that has much more robust methods for keeping things
private and untouchable, which, of course, brought its own problems.

Well, thanks Gary.
I did have a problem with that technique in that a prompt/alert would popup
and said basically, "The site you specified already exists in another zone.
Please remove the sit from this zone before placing in another zone". .?. It
did not do the task.
