Shortcuts don't connect to the net

J

Joe Dolan

Recently I had to reinstall win 98 from my HP recovery disk.

I have most programs working now, except the url shortcuts I place
on the desktop, don't respond by the usual doubleclick.

I can bring up IE from the taskbar, and type in or cut and paste a
url into IE, and it works fine.
Clicking on a Favorite doesn't work either.

TIA

It works for me. R-Clk one, & select Properties.

(a) At the General tab, does it say...?...
Type: Internet Shortcut
(b) From the Web Document tab, post the URL for us to try.

Try this Badour repair. Download, unzip, & click the ".reg" inside. This
will merge the fix into your Registry...

Link Association (Shortcut) Repair. W95 with IE4 and W98.

That is also an Internet Shortcut.

| TIA

You are welcome.

That's a fix for .LNK file types....an Internet shortcut is a .URL file type.

Open Internet Explorer.
Click the Tools menu> Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab.
Click the |Reset Web Settings| button.
Click OK.

If that doesn't help, double-click My Computer, click the View menu (or Tools menu)>
Folder Options.
Click the File Types tab.

In the Registered File Types list, select "Internet Shortcut", then click the |Edit|
button.
In the Actions box, select "Open", and click the |Edit| button.
In the box for "Application used to perform action", make sure it shows:

rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

If not copy/paste that line above exactly with no leading or trailing blank spaces.

Make sure the "Use DDE" box is NOT checked.

Click OK, then click OK in the previous window.

Now in the Registered File Types list, select "URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol",
then click the |Edit| button.
In the Actions box, select "Open", and click the |Edit| button.
In the box for "Application used to perform action", make sure it shows:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1

If not, copy/paste as described previously.

Put a check in the "Use DDE" box.

In the DDE Message box:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,

In the Application box:
IExplore

In the Topic box:
WWW_OpenURL

Click OK and Close all the way out.
You may have to log off or re-start.

Post back with what you find, and your results.

I was afraid of that. But I went & looked & there was no other. I see
what you are have suggested. That would have been next for me too.
Thanks, glee.
