Is Thumbs.db file necessary?

If I download even one or two pics, or hundreds, I get this Thumbs.db file.
Is there a way to get rid of this file? In one picture file there is almost 1
GB in the Thumbs.db file.

Thumbs.db contains the previews used by Windows Explorer when you use
thumbnail view. There's no reason why you shouldn't delete these files
when you have finished using thumbnail view but this could slow down the
display of thumbnails when you next visit a folder with thumbnail view as
the thumbnails have to be regenerated.

Windows XP has the option "Do not cache thumbnails" at Folder Options |
View which avoids the problem you are seeing however Win Me's version of
Windows Explorer hadn't advanced that far and therefore has no similar
setting.

Mike. Thanks for your fast reply. Been away last 6 months and behind news.
I see that Ad-Aware SE is no longer available in the freee V. What is a
good replacement - would SuperAntiVirus do? is there others. Glad to see
this group again.

A decent one which runs on WinME and works very well is the free version of
SuperAntiSpyware, I have that running on my WinME machine. I don't know the
one you mentioned and that sounds like an Anti-Virus program not a spyware
removal one, I think also there's still Spybot but I've never used that but
think it's OK for WinME.

Another that either Heirloom or Mart recommended was Spyware Terminator. I
have been using it for a while now and it appears to be good. Certainly runs
fast!!

Not me Dan, I've never used it. Although if HL (and you!) recommended it,
then I'm sure that's good enough for all. HL usually recommends well.

I (still) use AVG 7.5 for A-V on my WinMe boxes - and they were still
auto-updating (well they did again today!) with the latest defs.

Regarding Ad-Aware, I stopped using it even before it was updated to v2008
on both my WinMe and XP boxes. Got a little bit disillusioned with it and
tended not to run it unless I managed to remember to - which wasn't very
often.

I use AVG 8 Free now on my XP boxes, which includes a (sort of)
anti-spyware/adware scanner which appears to find the stuff that A-A used to
do (and more!). BUT the jury is still out here with AVG 8 - it certainly
now fits into the 'bloatware' category and IMHO, is somewhat (quite a bit!)
slower than AVG 7.5.

Maybe it's more thorough? Hmm..

AVG 7.5 is the one on my WinME as well Mart and it did the update today.
That one doesn't get turned on much now though and if it turns out that AVG
stops updating the 7.5 version I may very well go with Avast instead.

I took Ad-Aware off of the WinME machine and my XP I didn't want to bother
with the hassle of trying to get the SE version to update on there and on my
XP the 2007 version was a pain in the rear when it came to update the defs
the amount of times it came up with the message that it had an error and
needed to close after trying to get the new def files to install was a joke.
I didn't need the hassle especially as if it found anything it would only be
a couple of tracking cookies.

I put the free version of SuperAntiSpyware on WinME and the paid Pro version
on my XP and I'm more than happy with the results and performance.
