Icon Colour depth reduced after installin program

This may be a good signal that there is something wrong with the installed
software, but can anybody refer me to any fixes for icon colour depth on a
Win98 PC ?

What does the OP mean by "depth?" Colour is usually described
(1 generally) as a hue and an intensity
(2 specifically cf. Photoshop) measured by RGB figures in a gamma context.

We should not assume a change in colour indicates a software
error rather than hardware error (cf. age and type of monitor.)

All icons, or just icons associated with the app? If all icons, my first
inclination would be to check color settings in Display Properties, Settings
tab. You don't mention what kind of application you installed, but it may
have changed those settings. (Knowing the name of the application would help
immensely when trying to analyze this kind of problem. It's the kind of
thing you should always mention in a first post.)

It has been suggested the OP asked about color depth as defined in
Wikipedia, viz. bits per pixel. If so he should repost to confirm this:
or if not to amplify what he is asking about, viz. what actually appears
wrong with his monitor image.

Hi Gary,

All the Windows icons got changed to a low bit colour rendition. The
application I installed was Network Magic, but the manufacturer said they've
never heard of the problem before. I've seen the problem occur before after
rebooting to recover from a system crash. The correct icon colour always
comes back if I run Scandisk inn Safe Mode and then reboot again. I have no
tricks to recover the colour from this incident, however.

I even checked out a few spots I know about in the registry for displaying
full colour icons and icon cache size, but everything looks okay.

My icons are displayed with what looks like 256 colours instead of 16 or 32
bit colour.

/ start / settings / control panel / display / settings
will identify your monitor and its hardware (display device)
and its settings (1 = Colors, 2 = Screen Area.)
Find out whether you can change items 1 or 2 and post this
information here here with all other information on this panel.

/ start / settings / control panel / system / device manager / display
adapters
lets you identify monitor software (drivers) and update these if
necessary. (Manufacturers' web sites provide free device driver
software: but probably none recently for Win98 installations.)

Have you checked the "Shell Icon BPP (bits per pixel)" setting at the
following registry keys?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

Is it set to 8 (256 colours)?

Just thought toggling the Display color settings might do something.

Perhaps: Delete ShellIconCache, then reboot.

Is this one of the settings you mentioned?:

How big is your ShellIconCache, anyway? Have you tweaked the size at all? Is
there a value "Max Cached Icons"="4096" under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]

FWIW, I recommend this:
http://aumha.org/regfiles.php#icons

It will create a new setting in Folder Options. I'd try maxing it out.

Well I tried everything, including the registry IconCache fix on the web

What about...?...

(1) "Control Panel, Display, Effects tab"
Is it checked to "Show icons using all possible colors?"

(2) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab"
Is there a red/yellow ?/! on anything, especially on the
Display Adapter?
