Installing a wireless card

Hi -

I am helping a friend with a small problem, and I would appreciate
some help. He has an older Sony VAIO laptop and we are trying to
install an SMC PCMCIA card so that he can join a wireless network.
When we insert the card, Windows pops up and asks for a driver for a
newly discovered "PCI Network Controller". Pointing Windows to the
driver for the card does not work (eg. it does not think this is the
driver it is looking for).

I have long since stopped using W98, but I seem to remember having to
deal with this or a similar problem before, but the solution is
escaping me. For some reason, I suspect that the missing PCI Network
Controller Driver is a Windows driver, and can be found somewhere
else. Or there is some other solution...

What model number and/or part number is the SMC wireless PCCard NIC?

Where are you directing it to find the Win98 driver?
If on a driver CD, are you directing it to the Win98 folder on the CD?

If Windows networking components haven't been previously installed then the
installation procedure is looking for the W98 installation CD.

Hey guys -

Thanks for your help. It is an SMC2535W. It does not ask specifically
for the Windows CD. The laptop doe snot have a CD drive, but it does
have the W98 install cab files on it. The screwy thing is that when I
point the driver request to the downloaded driver, it says that this
is not the right driver. Any further ideas / guidance?

I am going to try another card and see if that gets me anywhere.

Sorry - model number SMC 2635W.

The exact sequence is:

- insert PCMCIA card
- insert tone is played, light goes on card
- hardware wizard opens
- detects "PCI Network controller" and asks for driver

***NOTE:
The driver you're attempting to install may actually be an installation,
check to see if it needs *run* rather than direction to the INF.
And there are times when a specific PCMCIA card will only work in one of the
slots, try moving the card to the other slot. Also ensure BIOS is set
properly.

There is also a key or two in the registry that might need checked.

"STEP 1: Choose product Information"
Select Wireless for Category
Select SMC 2635W for Model number
Enter the Part Number next

"Where do I find my part number?"

Then go to
"STEP 2 - What Would You Like To Download?"
Select "Driver", then select the operating system.

There are two possible part numbers and they take different drivers, one takes
version 1 and the other version 2, IF you have Win98SE.

If you have the original version of Win98 (Win98 First Edition), they do not list an
available driver for the card.

Which version of Win98 is being used by your friend?

How can I determine what version of Windows 95, 98, 98 Second Edition (SE), or Me I
have installed?

You've gotten added a "3D" to the beginning, probably from copy/pasting from source
code of Quoted Printable.

I not sure the article is relevant at this point though....it hasn't been determined
if there is anything related to the card in Device Manager yet. So far it sounds
more like the wrong driver has been downloaded, or it is Win98FE and there is no
available driver.

likely quoted printable for here or one of the other forums, thanks for the
correction...

Yes, you're right, it hasn't been determined, just some info which MIGHT be
relevant. Didn't want to lose another querier without supplying at least
some possibly relevant info.....

VER does that...

WINVER just opens up a GUI window titled "Windows" that just says
