Ad-Aware

PAT (Paul)

I know lavasoft Ad-Aware SE as we knew it for years is no longer available.
Now their site advertise Ad-Aware 2008... not entirely sure if this is a
"free" or "trial". Can someone shed some light, and if not really free,
suggest a replacement. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure there is a free version for that one but I can't really say
for sure as I stopped using it when the 2007 version came out, too many
hiccups with it.
Have you had a look at SuperAntiSpyware Paul, there is a free version and a
paid one. The free version can only do a manual scan but the Pro version has
real time protection, I use the Pro version and find it very good but that
runs on XP I have the free version installed on my WinME machine and neither
takes up too much in the way of resources.

In addition to Joan's recommendation, take a look at a-squared free.

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

It had a high detection rate in a comparison of malware scanners. The
test did not include malware removal effectiveness.

It's a "free trial" for 30 days, I believe, the "totally free" times are
over for Ad-Aware.
As Joanie suggested "SuperAntiSpyware" is a very good substitute (originally
introduced by Heather van Figgs) and I use "a-squared Free" in addition
also, as mentioned by TomV.

Harry.

I dumped it when became 2007 due to it not ever finding anything and
that the feature you have to pay to get still used RAM and loaded with
Windows. Does Superantispyware ever find anything?

I suppose a lot depends on your surfing habits on whether it finds anything
or not.
If it finds anything on my box it's usually a couple of tracking cookies but
a lot of times it finds nothing, but then I also have Windows Defender,
there's not a lot that can get to my machine <g>

I guess I don't need it, then. Nowadays I do all my surfing with Ubuntu.

and thats when trouble starts,,, when one 'thinks' not a lot can get in.

after ditching adaware (cos of their stupidity) my combo is now:::
'spybot, a-squared, spywareblaster, and avast',, and even then, i couldnt say that the govt' in
some way form or manner doesnt own/control them... no-one can.
same for my above spyware protection software.... i couldnt tell you whether or not they are the
same ppl who write spyware thereby enticing the mums n' dads to purchase their products,,,,,
lets get real ppls.

point being,,, 'HouseKeeping'...! good puter housekeeping and using file-destroyers at
d-o-d level are the best place to start.
constant defrag is a must,,, and yes, it does take a few months of life out of your hard-drive,
but its worth it.

joan, trust me, there is More than a lot that can get into your machine..... after all, it is
just a machine, isnt it?

And your protection for root kits and BIOS malware is? There's a reason
that Linux has a reputation for being safer than Windows -)

Well, you lost my interest at *puter* and *ppls*.....and I do believe
Joanie can take care of both herself and her computer. ROFL!!

Jeanette.......we have all known each other for roughly 8 years and
trust me, there isn't anything out there that we collectively don't know
about. I specialized in viruses and malware.....Mike is the Guru of
WinME & XP......Heirloom knows all the cleaners and savers of
accidentally deleted stuff......etc., etc.

So if you want advice, just ask us. OH, and as for who writes the
spyware and malware?? Know some of them too and they DON'T work for the
anti-malware/anti-spyware companies......that is a really dumb myth.
LOL.

Back to lurking and jewellery.

Hey Joanie, Elayne leaves Saturday and she has now got her *mojo* back
and is churning out some lovely pieces. Sob....I am going to miss her
badly!!

Loon.....those were cute pictures.

Mike....I owe you *many emails*....lol.

Been a tad busy lately.

I am guilty of not replying to emails.....dunno why. Just one of those
moods, I guess. OTOH, I have been busy getting ready for the brat's 2
week visit and also making jewellery. Not to mention bidding on eBay
for Swarovski crystals for a song and so on.

Loon sent me pictures of himself in his *birthday suit*......bwa ha ha.
No, they were cats and dogs. Elayne just bought herself a dog before
she came and it is so cute. Half Shih Tzu and half Havanese......a pure
Cuban breed. Shoot, all the Yanks on here won't know what it is cuz
they can't know anything about Cuba. ROFL!!

I promise I will write you and Mikey very shortly and send you some pics
of our creations. The local bead store guy really likes the stuff we
are making. I am going to have to figure out how and where to sell it.
eBay? Nah. Local store? Perhaps. Certainly not going to put an ad in
the paper giving my address what with all the crime lately, lol.

Elayne did an amazing copper & Swarovski necklace and is now working on
yet another expensive gemstone one. Wahhhhhhh, I am going to miss her
terribly, but we won't tell her!! It is her birthday tomorrow so have
to take her clothes shopping. She leave at 4 pm on Saturday.

i know these things heather,, problem is, this generation that is alive today is the most
un-trustworthy that ever existed.... watch the six oclock news,, (and even that cant be trusted).
**puters** (lol) are just another tool to fool the foolish,,, justa thought.

then you'd have to know them rooooooooley pretty well,, even to the extent of pillow-talk,, cos'
no-one is worthy of trust in this generation, and no-one is trustworthy either. (i bet you dont
know what your cousin is doing right now? i sure as heck dont know what mine is doing everyone
in jails are someones cousin, or someones sister, or someones brother, or even worse, someones's
mothers' son... yes?)

a "puter" is lika gun,,,, (and will be quoting merican saying) "its not the gun that is at fault,
its the one holding it".. if anyone thinks that a 'puter' is not a gun, then they
havent quite matured yet. and, yes, the user is still the problem,,,, or more to the
point, the attitude of the user.... take osama for instance,,,, (and the list goes on (or
back) right from caesars times,,, through to and past hitlers,, and bushes,, and onward to a
new american pressie,, but alas, when new pressie comes in, the world is already at war.....
and 99% of it is via 'puters'.... am i making sense yet heather?)

and if you 'think' for one minute, or one nano-second, that every key you press isnt logged in a
place where you didnt authorise it to be logged, then you are sorely mistaken.

anyhow, is no biggee,

Two things:

1. "Puter" is not a word. "Pewter" is. "Kewl" is not cool.

2. You're paranoid. Trust me, what you type on your computer is not
important enough for *anyone* to be logging it. That said, if you want
true safety, check out Ubuntu Linux, www.ubuntu.com, and get yourself a
router with a hard firewall I recommend Edimax routers.

There is a lot of misinformation regarding this post.

There is definitely a Free Version of AdAware 2008 and it is NOT a trial
version although there is a paid version too.

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Also, AdAware SE can still be used except that you will have to do
manual updates - the updates are posted at the Lavasoft web site on the
page below - look at the top right side - both the AAW 2008 AND AAW SE
version updates are there.

http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/

One can use a third party utility in a batch file to download the update
but it's a little tricky to configure.

They may call it a "free" version, but it is only a "TrialPay" version and
with it goes a free "Plus" version. And none of this pertains to WinME
anymore.
Doesn't make much of a difference either, does it?
We've found substitutes of at least equal value. <H>.

No it is a "free" version "next" to an "offer" for a plus "version"
