Did something in one of the latest updates affect the windows XP pro logon
process?

Prior to this new system, XP pro hadn't yet upgraded to SP3, I built a new
system, and updated everything including SP3.
Things didn't seem to change until just a couple days ago when I came home
and found a message stating an update had been installed and a reboot
performed.
The system was at screen wherein I had to choose a user.
There is only one user on the system and prior to this if I did a reboot or
restart the system automatically went to my desktop, no "login" necessary.
No ,at every reboot or restart I must choose a user.
I have checked:
display properties/screen saver/on resume, password protect, it is
unchecked.
display properties/screen saver/monitor power/power/advanced/Prompt for
password when computer resumes form standby, it is unchecked.

Now if I go to start/control panel/user accounts/change the way a user logs
on or off and I UNcheck "use the welcome screen" XP changes to the classic
logon/off style, but I still have to choose a user.
This changes the start/shutdown to classic style as well.

How do I get back to the XP style shutdown menu and not have to choose a
user everytime the system reboots or starts?

This is what I did for my home system (XP SP3) but won't guarantee it
I downloaded and ran the "powertoys" (Tweak UI) collection of tweaks. One of
the options will set your password and bypass the "logon" screen. Just fires
up.
Of course they warn you that this is an "unsecure" way of doing things.

.. Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
.. Type in the following:
control userpasswords2
.. now click OK
.. In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the
primary logon.
.. Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
.. Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the
selected users
password.

Click OK.
The changes will work the next time you restart your computer.

I have the opposite problem. After the upgrade to SP3, one of my existing
user accounts (I had two) disappeared from the login/switch user screen. I
tried recreating it, but it said "account already exists." All of the
files-- favorites, my documents, everything-- is still there for this user,
there's just no way to access it.
