Can't take a trick:Epsom CX5500 with win98SE

J

Jason James

Howdy

I found an office supply place who also sold printers/scanner/copiers
(allin one). They had spec sheets in frames for each, and I found more than
one which could run on win98SE,..no earlier tho.

Went to a larger electronics place which sold printers etc and selected an
end of run Epsom CX5500 (2007 model).

I set it up and tried the next USB port and error message "cant communicate
with USBPRNT1). Checked Epsoms copy function and all OK. The thing appears
to be working.

Tried removing the new KB. reinstate the old one with the 1/4" circle plug/
This left the 2 USBs unused. Plugged Epsom into USB-1 reran the install CD,
all OK, but when tried to print it still cant communicate with USB port.
Appreciate any ideas on this,....Jason

Need specs for computer - make and model

You might try this:
Make sure the device is NOT connected when installing the software, wait
until it prompts you or restarts.
Since you have already installed the device, remove and uninstall, and
retry using this suggestion.

Try one or other of the following USB device information utilities:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/UVCView.x86.exe
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/usbview.exe

Can they see your printer?

Frank, I downloaded the first program (UVCView) and it worked well, It
identified the USB port number one, was connected to the Epson. No further
news on the printer. I tried another cable (A connector to USB), but no
change.

You've proved that the hardware is communicating OK. UVCView doesn't
require any device drivers to be installed, so it looks like a
software issue. I'd be trying what MEB suggested.

Otherwise go to Start -> Settings -> Printers, r-click your Epson,
select Properties -> Details, and look for any problems.

Done. The port comment indicates the Epson, but has an in brackets note
saying "device is not connected". I'll mess around for a while then if nogo,
I'll try MEB's suggestions,

Hey you made it back,,,
The indications are that you must uninstall your prior failed
installation(s), cleanup *thoroughly* [check in the INF folder {likely in
the INF\OTHER\*.* folder}, re-start in Safe mode and check for "ghosts"
and/or old USB or driver leftovers and remove those then install the
software in Normal Mode *without* the printer connected, *until advised to
connect the printer*. Doing otherwise appears to cause installation issues,
likely related to Windows trying to control the USB (PnP) prior to software
installation. This happens more often with Network adapters, though other
USB devices may also require this installation order.
Some times you may be required to uninstall the USB Hub and secondaries to
clear the registry, so if there is still an issue try this using the above
but with this Hub removal in the Safe Mode cleanup/check, then try the
re-installation.

The interface information was crutial, but it shows that regardless of the
motherboard or adapter support {1.1 or 2.0} you will be able to use the
printer.

Okay, as you have now indicated older files from other printers, make sure
to clean them up as well. You MAY find them listed in the INF\OTHER folder
as well.
Any *branded* software [device specific] may need removed also.

IF you have difficulties, you can try this:

Open the INFs found related to these printers and failed installations in a
text editor and look for the files and registry settings which were
used/installed for that device. Carefully remove/move those files and
registry settings [export prior to removal] to a temporary folder and watch
for errors occurring. IF no errors after a few days or a week of regular
usage, you can likely delete them. DO NOT remove files related to standard
Windows files [like mfc**, com**, odb**, ole**, std**, sti**, etc.], other
files should/must be checked by at least using Properties [or preferably
File Investigator, FileAlyzer, or some other like tool] *prior* to removal
and/or deletion.

Any questions or doubts on whether a file or registry setting is safe to
delete should be checked on the NET or in here.
