Glen,,
I was at your site, but its got hammers and nails happening. My reason for the visit was regarding
a file you have called 'runfix.zip' which restores the utility that updates the rb.cab files.
I was hoping for maybe some print outlining what it does, or even if it is the utility that I was
told about.

Question.. when will your site be up and running?

G

Hammers and nails??
The .zip file you refer to is still there, so I don't know what you are talking
about.
Use this direct link to download the file:
http://home.triad.rr.com/glenvee/files/runfix.zip

The .zip file contains a Registry file (.reg). The .reg file must be extracted from
the .zip file to your desktop, after downloading the .zip to your hard drive.

Then you merge the .reg file into the Registry by either double-clicking it, or by
right-clicking it and clicking Merge on the menu that appears.

Then click OK to the confirmation message.
Reboot when done.

All it does is add an entry to autorun the Registry backup script at startup, and
also add the two default PowerProfile entries to startup.

I posted that here over a year ago, IIRC.

Glass doesn't understand that many of us MVPs have a site for private
storage, a few "master posts", hard-to-find files to download, fixes we
build ourselves, REG files, etc., almost all meant for direct linking from
the NGs, not browsing like a "normal" website. In my case, even the
downloads don't always last forever. After all, in most cases, we pay for
the web space and bandwidth.

Right....but nowhere did I ever direct anyone to that placeholder web page. The
link was always directly to the downloaded file.
Still, it wouldn't be too hard to "guess" what unlinked folder name the file is
stored in, considering the folder name is *part of* the direct file link. -)

Note that I don't give permission to view the contents of folders like your
site does. If it doesn't have an index.htm (or one of a few others) it's off
limits. Glass might easily have tried the parent folder of runfix.zip to see
if there were any documentation available, then tried the "home site" for
the same reason: looking for documentation, though the contents look plenty
self-explanatory to me, <g>. There's supposed to five default Runs. You only
have four. And it shows you what bad condition my mind is in that I can't
remember the fifth!

BTW, as others have said, some people, myself included, use their web
"sites" purely as web "space". The alternative is to upload public
stuff to file hosting sites such as Imageshack. BTW, if anyone uses
such a service, could they please post the direct URL for their image

can avoid the ads, banners, popups, etc.

yes, it just said your site was under construction or renevation,, was only telling you what i
saw.

yes, i found the file quite easily,, just wasnt sure if it was what was needed to help my friend
whose computer doesnt have the entry in msconfig that is needed for a daily backup of the
registry..... or so i am led to believe.
(excuse,, i meant a backup on each reboot or shutdown-startup.. i think)

if your instructions below are for doing the above, then i will give it a whirl.. (yes, i know, its
easy to give something a 'whirl' when using someone elses computer.. but in this case, havent
got much choice,, even after googling you still seem to be the one with the 'tool' to do the
repair...... btw, does this sort of thing happen much? like, does the backup utility
disappear from msconfig often?? cant say i ever saw anything like this before..... and when it
does disappear,, is it still in the registry? and functioning fine?

Yes, the instructions are to add the auto-backup of the Registry into the startup
group. Assuming that the files are all in place, the "fix" of mine that you found
should work for you.

Yes, some users lose these entries, from corruption of the Registry or a hard drive
crash or from using a "snake oil" Registry cleaner or from who knows what.

thanks for input/reply,,
just two questions,, because i was taught that even if you ask a dumb question, you will learn
something.

1)you mentioned "Assuming that the files are in place" etc etc... where? what files? how can i
confirm?

2) the 'startup group',, ? where might i find that group.. for perusal? i am hoping you dont
mean the start-up folder within windows... if so, then looking dumb isnt a worthless lesson,, i
would have learned something... ie, dont ask dumb questions.

i am going to that computer on tuesday,, so will look for reply here tomorrow night..... thanks
for help.

re: the automatic registry backup issue you are trying to fix, you just need to
ensure that the file scanregw.exe is not missing from the Windows folder. If a
manual backup works, then it is there.

A manual backup can be done this way:
Click Start>Run, type the following and click OK:
scanregw

However I would in this case type the full path, to make sure it is in the exactly
correct location:
Start>Run> c:\windows\scanregw.exe

If you get an error with that command line, it may be present but in the wrong
folder. In that case you would have to search for it on the hard drive and move it
to the Windows folder.
Another possible problem could be if the Windows folder on your friend's computer is
not named "Windows", which is often the case. Some folks will install Windows into
a folder of a different name. If so, you would have to edit my .reg file using
Notepad, to change the name of the Windows folder in the .reg file, to whatever your
friend's folder is actually named.

The StartUp folder (as seen on the Start menu or in Windows Explorer) is a small
*part* of the startup group or startup axis. When you look in msconfig> Startup
tab, the Location column shows you the startup location for each item. A few may be
in the StartUp folder or in the win.ini and system.ini files, but most are in Run
keys of the Registry. The entire group of locations Win98 can use is called the
Startup Group or Startup Axis.

The places Win9x uses to load at Startup:

- the load= and run= lines in the win.ini,
- the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI (.386 and .vxd files),
- the Startup folder, C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
- the AllUsers folder C:\Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

and the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Setup
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
