Malware Removal Tool kills Explorer

H

Hewitt

After installing Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830 v.
2.0), Explorer lost connectivity to the server. I received no report from
the tool.

On reboot, my Zone Alarm virus checker said it was unable to recognize the
network and offered to reestablish the network. I agreed. Outlook Express
anounced it was no longer the default mailclient and asked if I would like it
to be. I agreed. But I cannot get new email, because, says Outlook Express,
"the connection to the server failed." Explorer still cannot connect to the
internet. I have run through the connection troubleshooting and everything
checks out as just fine, including pings to my DNS Server.

Meanwhile my laptop, connected via a wireless access point to my router, has
retained its access to the server and the internet. Obviously there is no
problem with my internet service provider, router, or router connection to my
PC.

Does anybody have a clue about how to fix this problem? Going back to the
restore point will cost a day of reinstalling a new printer. I will also
have to block the MS Malware Removal Tool to keep Explorer connected. I
worry that this may be a case of malware protecting itself from the removal
tool.

Nope, it wasn't the Malicious Software Removal Tool. It was another of the
updates. And, Zone Alarm is not compatible with it.

This has been discussed over and over in many of the MS newsgroups.

Zone Alarm has fixed their problem and has released new ZA updates.
