Unable to install USB driver

My son was just given a Mp3 player which needs to have a Windows 98 USB
driver installed. The problem is that Windows doesn't detect the driver on
the install CD when running the Add Hardware wizard.

What happens is that the driver setup program is installed, Windows builds a
new driver information database, detects that it has found the Sunplus
Multidisk disk and will search for a driver for it, but doesn't find one.

I've tried the "Search for the best driver for your device" option, the
"Display a list of all drivers" option, "Have Disk" and that all didn't
work. Craig doesn't have a website so there are no FAQs. The player won't
work with Windows if the driver isn't installed.

I guess to generalize the question, how does one install a USB driver from a
CD when Windows won't detect it?

thought the 2.0 driver would be backward compatible. Will I need to buy a
USB 2.0 card?

USB 2.0 devices need USB 2.0 unless specifically noted... the driver would
have to supply support for USB 1{.1}.
USB 2.0 adapters are relatively cheap, however, they need 98SE to function
properly.

An mp3 player *should* be backward-compatible with USB 1.1, but the documentation
for the player should state that it is, as MEB mentioned.

Does he have Win98SE?

Exactly what is the name and model of the player? It might help if we could look up
its probably sparse documentation, if it's a Sunplus.

Does the driver disc have a folder tree if you browse it with Windows Explorer? If
so, look for a Win98 folder and/or a Driver folder to point the installer to.

If all else fails, you may be able to access the player using a generic USB driver
for Win98SE, and manually copy the songs you want to play, to the device.

Try one of the tools designed to query USB hubs and devices such as the
USBView which came with 98SE in the tools\reskit\diagnose folder on the
installation CDROM. It might be available on disk in the Options folder but
I doubt it.
A better alternative [due to the lack of documentation available for your
system] is one of the hardware diagnostic utilities such as Aida32, MiTeC
MSI [nice tool, does not require installation], SiSoft Sandra {Pro}
[excellent tool], Everest Home Edition, and a number of other diagnostic
tools which can provide in-depth information on chipsets, BIOS, devices,
etc.. With one of these tools you will have a better understanding of all
aspects of the computer and what it can support.

Another tool you have installed will query the system for its present
configuration. Its not generally documented or used, but everyone has it.
Its called hwinfo and is used in the run box with the commandline > hwinfo
/ui <. Its a good way to find out what has been found/installed, drivers,
etc..

Opps, forgot to answer what I meant by an adapter... YES you would need a
PCI [or an old ISA] USB 2.0 adapter/card installed in your computer.
Generally they support either two or four USB devices [direct connect, 2
channels {or 2 split}- home/general use, or four channel {2 separate chips
with two channels each - industrial grade}] though some of the newer
chips/adapters supply four [or more] channels with a single chip.
You can add additional HUBS [powered is preferred] to increase the amount
of USB devices you can connect. Hubs sometimes also provide a card reader or
other as well.

You could fudge by adding a USB 2.0 hub device, but the computer would be
still be at USB 1 speed and capability. The USB 2.0 Hub would provide the
2.0 connection, but the 2.0 Hub *MUST* be able to connect to and communicate
with USB 1. These devices were produced around the transitional period, and
may no longer be available {?}.

Make sure though, that IF NECESSARY the device/card has 98SE drivers [-
most are PnP - though you might be able to use one of the Universal
Drivers].

Use either of the following programs to detect your MP3 player:

Look for vendor IDs and product IDs in the output. For example, here
is what I see for an MP3/MP4 player:

idVendor: 0x10D6 = Actions Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
idProduct: 0x1101
iProduct: 0x01
English (United States) "USB 2.0(HS) Flash Disk "

In the above case I would search the CD for INF files containing the
text strings "10D6" and "1101".

Otherwise I have found that the Maximus Decim NUSB driver set will
probably work with your hardware. The MP3 player will show up as a
disc drive in Explorer and you will be able to write and read it just
like any other disc.

The mp3 player is a Craig Model CMA317B. It is designed to work with
Win98SE (which is our OS) and has USB 2.0 interface. I emailed their tech
support, but no surprise, there's been no response.

I forgot to mention that the installer CD has a folder tree and I pointed to
the folder(s) where the driver should be but Windows still couldn't find the
driver. I even copied the file folders to the desktop but it still doesn't
work.

Something you said about finding a generic driver sparked an idea.
I'm actually not sure what I did, but I found a Sunplus USB driver thru the
Hardware wiz. I did get a dialog box about the driver not being designed for
use with the unit but I clicked thru, installed the driver, and now the
software detects the mp3 player and all is fine.

As I wrote Glen, the player works fine--I found an existing Sunplus driver
in Windows. Thanks for the link to the 2 USB device viewers as well as the
link to the USB driverset download.

Turns out I didn't need to buy an USB 2.0 adapter after all. I found a
Sunplus driver in Windows and everything has worked out. Thanks for all the

Interesting, if you found it using the New Hardware wizard rather than
online...since Win98SE should not contain any Sunplus drivers natively.

My guess is that there is an error somewhere in the .inf file from the Sunplus CD
which prevented it from being recognised as the correct driver, but it got copied to
your Inf folder anyway when you tried the earlier installs using the CD. When you
searched with the Hardware Wizard now, looking for a driver, that Sunplus driver
cropped up, and turns out it IS the right driver once you manually select it.

That's my theory, anyway.... :)

I suspect the OP could find out what happened by looking at the
following registry keys. If his system is using a generic driver, as
is mine (Maximus Decim NUSB), then maybe his device was detected on
the basis of its class and subclass (see MatchingDeviceId) rather than
its VID and PID. The name of the file in the InfPath would also be of
interest.

Well, looking into the files seems the W2K driver is actually Microsoft's
5.1.2269.1 (Lab01_N.000912-2233) usbstor.sys renamed, and the smmd.sys is or
could be a generic USB Mass Storage Driver ver. 1.10 from 98DDK.
The specifics [as usual] come into play with the registry settings, USB\VID
entries, and pdr modifiers. The sunplus.bin seems to be the major player for
fat activities.

The .bin file looks like it might be a 96KB firmware image (128KB -
32KB boot block ???). It contains references to FAT12 and FAT16 and
various terms such as ROCK POP Jazz CLaS DEL REP OFF FULL LO batt.

smmdpdr.pdr appears to be a "USB Mass Storage Port Driver".

Right, that's what it seemed like to me, the data used for formatting and
device activities likely via some other part of the application. Perhasp, as
in an iPod, the necessry initialization for the device.

The statement "#USB Mass Storage Port Driver Sample" is included, and the
file does contain the ACPI and CONFIGMG coding.
