How to configure a DHCP and DNS Backup server

M

Marco

Hello.

In my network I have those servers:
- DHCP server running on Windows 2000 server
- DNS server running on Windows 2003 server

How do I configure a windows 2003 Std to be a DHCP and DNS Backup. My idea
is if any of the main servers failed, this server would assume those
functions.

Is it possible?

I'm presuming you run AD, so create another DC and make it a DNS and GC box.
Re DHCP - set up another DHCP server using a non-overlapping scope.

This is a duplicate post in the Active Directory group.

I agree with Lanwench, but I'll generall create overlapping scopes with
reciprocol exclusions to avoid NAK problems. This is where a host contacts
the "other" server when asking to renew the address. Since the address isn't
in a valid pool it gets a NAK from the server and can stop the process there
rather than requesting a new address. This means that the workstation will
drop off the network when the lease expires. When they both have the same
rule, the NAK doesn't occur, but the server offers an alternate address in
the response.
