Windows 98 CD - which was the last one released?

Briefly, I bought Win95 CD and found I got the final release (OEM
Service Release 2.5). I thought that was useful - to get the final
release.

I'd like to buy Win98. When looking on places like ebay, how can I
tell which is the final version - by squinting at the blurry photos
sellers upload?

It's interesting - reading wikipedia they say win95 had quite a few
releases, but win98 only had 2. Is this correct?!

Also, does Win98 (SE version) greatly benefit from applying MS
patches, strictly in terms of stability or useful additional
functionality, and not in terms of security. (I am not interested in
applying security patches to Win98 because I'll never connect this
retro machine to the net.)

Thanks a lot for any advice.

Yes, just the two, 98FE {first edition} and SE {Service/Second edition}.
Millennium was the third in the series [cross over to NT]..

There were several updates which might be applicable for a standard
non-Internet installation [never to connect] dealing with system files
{DCOM, MDAC, GDI, DirectX, JET, etc.], memory, hard drives {size limitations
and tools}, ACPI/APM, shutdown issues, specific fixes for various
BIOS/motherboard problems, and several others. Also some video card drivers
and other will not work properly without some of the upgrades/fixes.

You MAY also need some of these files depending upon what other
applications you might install, or issues related to problems with your
particular setup and/or computer. If you supply your computer manufacturer
and model, or the motherboard and hard drive/devices used, and intended
application installation/use, we MAY be able to advise on which files might
be crutial or necessary.

The last version of win98 was simply win98SE.

Back when I ran win98 regularly, I upgraded to win98se simply for ICS.
While I was waiting for my cd to arrive from ebay...
I ended up finding a free 3rd party utility, so could have gone without "SE"

I had also heard that the second edition had improved USB support
but I did not notice any difference.

Though to add USB 2 the appropriate drivers and hardware would be needed...
I'd imagine Win98se would be the way to go if you'd want USB 2 .

Philo, I am posting from Windows 98 Second Edition now and USB 2.x works
great in 98 Second Edition. You just need to make sure the add-in card has
drivers that support Windows 98 Second Edition with USB 2.x. BTW, do you
know anything about the future USB 3.x? I am too lazy now to bother with the
Google search engine about it.

Here is a lot of USB info

For me USB 2 is just fine but if they are going to go with something
faster...
that's OK by me!

4 versions of windows 95 that I'm aware of. 95, A, B, and C. The second 2
support FAT 32 and USB 1.0.

98SE, last version of 98 supports USB 2.0. There is also a patch, if 98SE
is installed, for performance issues that includes firewire as well. This
and other fixes were included in Millenium Edition at the get-go.

Bailout: Friend, relative, business acquaintance
paying a sum to get the accused
out of jail until court is ready to proceed.

Bailout: U.S. taxpayers paying a sum of
money for some critical business failure
that was fleecing the taxpayer to begin
with.
Somehow, the word "bailout" seems
very different.

Thanks philo and I just checked and have 8 tabs open in Mozilla Firefox and
my system resources for anyone interested in Microsoft Windows 98 Second
Edition are as follows:

System resources: 72% free

User resources: 72% free

GDI resources: 80% free

Ah, GDI is Graphic Device Interface which I forget and great thanks to the
website located below and all the Microsoft experts and MVPs and other people
like PCR and you philo who go the extra mile to help people out.

Lil' Dave as far as I understand, USB 2.0 is supported via third parties with
98 Second Edition and natively in Windows ME. Is this correct?

Versions of Windows earlier than XP may not have been mentioned simply
because Microsoft doesn't support them.

Not saying you're wrong, I just wouldn't trust that article as definitive.

It appears USB [the basics] 2.0 WAS supported natively {hub, the basic
chips, etc., though updated drivers might have been needed}, but the
individual devices may not be [PID and VID, various devices type specifics
later defined locally in XP up, e.g., camera specifics, etc. {PnP,
UPnP}...].

Thanks very much for all the info, and also to everyone else's
replies.

My mobo is a PIII based one, with Intel 440BX chipset. I have a
modern Samsung IDE hard drive. For graphics, I am currently using a
Matrox 450 AGP.

Actually, I need to clarify that I have got Win98SE. I just had a
feeling that as Win95 was released with lots of different "revisions",
that I would have to go hunting for the very final Win98 build. But
now I realise I have got the final version, it's SE!

Thanks.
