Helen

Hello,
The Logo for Windows was replaced by an logo for AOL when that was the ISP.
Also, online help goes to aolhelp not Microsoft. This is on IE and OE. I do
not see it on My Computer windows only the correct logo for windows. How do
I reset this? I tried to repair IE and that did not work.

The script Worked well. Thank-you!

That seems like a nice little utility, is there a way to go right to the
registry and straighten this out by myself? The reason is that if the vbs
script is detected as a virus, I will not be able to use it. Also, some
others who read this may have problems using the vbs script. tia

Locate and record the value of "Default User ID" in
HKEY_Current_User\Identities. It's a long number I'll abbreviate DUD. Next,
delete the value named "WindowTitle" from the following Key::

HKEY_Current_User\Identities\DUD\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\

Since I can only respond to one at a time and I need to read what Glenn
suggests and what you wrote is pretty straight forward, I will start here
first. Gary, you say the H_Key value and I found that but the "Widows Title"
value is not in the set. I have already run the vbs script and it may have
altered that entry. The other half of the question was that this username
keeps going to aolhelp instead of Microsoft Help/support on the dropdown
menu of OE. It appears that IE is working correctly now and going to
Microsoft support. There is in that H_Key an entry that is an AB that
implies goto aolhelp.

The script deletes the entire String Value. No trace left behind. Note that
there's no space and no "s" in the name of the value: "WindowTitle". I put
in a silly string and while it appeared in the OE title bar, it did not
affect IE's.

I'm afraid you'll have to hope that Glen's info leads you to the rest of
your answers. I answered your question by reading the script and
experimenting. I have no idea where the stuff is that deals with those
menus. Does the menu look right, just not go to the right place? If so,
search the Registry for at least a partial string of the destination --
"AOL" is a string I'd search for, as an example. If clicking some menu item
lands you at a website, try searching the Registry for the main domain name
, sub-domain string... If the menu does not look correct, says something
about AOL, search the Registry for the improper items -- If it says, "AOL
Help", you could search for that.

I used to recommend reinstalling IE over the top, and in drastic situations
I still do. But I no longer recommend the overinstall lightly, it's not a
neat process and can leave problems in its wake, I doubt you consider this
issue a drastic one, and I'm not even sure it would work.

Do be sure to follow proper Registry editing practices and File>Export every
Key you intend to edit before proceeding.

I found a string under HelpURL referring to aol and changed it to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx
I do not know if this is the "best" website at Microsoft for OE but it was
the online help URL for IE. Does this look correct to you?

Is that possible? That is where the IE online help goes. I am writing about
OE in this case though. I have never been able to use the online help in the
drop down menu or any other point except perhaps the html help in the main
menu off the taskbar to go to an KB article. Any suggestions for a url
there?

Nevermind, I misread your post. You just indicated that when you fixed
whatever you fixed, that's where you go to when you click the menu item.
What menu item is it that you're clicking to get to that site? The exact
name of the menu item, please. Outlook Express, Help menu... Then what?

You're saying that there is, somewhere in the Registry, an entry named
"HelpURL" with a value that is a website. It would be quite helpful if you
were to give us that Key name. Just right-click the Key, Copy key name, then
paste it into your reply.

Well, in none of my clean, basic (but fully updated) Win98 installations (98
Original or 98 SE) is there anywhere such an entry in the Registry. This
indicates to me that perhaps it shouldn't be there at all and that you
should try deleting the value altogether (after exporting the Key first for
safe keeping.)

I really want to remove all the AOL leftovers after uninstall. For example
one other user on this machine has a folder in the TIF called content of
IEv.5 and in it is tons of AOL junk. What is it and why is it still there?
There are 5 folders there of AOL and yet it has been years since it was the
ISP! None of this was removed on the uninstall.

That's what I though. That menu item doesn't even exist in the standard
install. There's a sub-menu labeled "Microsoft on the Web", but no "Online
Help". So, you can leave it the way it is, your you can search for the
string "online help" in the Registry and see what pops up.

Is the questionable folder in the active TIF folder? Your certain? Is that
TIF folder in C:\Windows or somewhere else? What you do is restart to a
Command Prompt Only, navigate to the parent folder of the TIF folder, then
run:
DELTREE TEMPOR~1 /y

Then press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart. You new fresh TIF folder should contain
what the standard IE5/6 TIF contains, which is a bunch of smoke & mirrors.
If the folders are still present, then they aren't really there, they're
elsewhere and you'll just have to track them down using Find>Files & Folders
and some common sense, then delete them.

CORRECTION Re: Windows Logo

For the DELTREE command, it's better not to use the /y switch. You want to
make sure that you really are deleting the Temporary Internet Files. Also,
and probably more important, you should run SMARTDRV command before the
DELTREE command or it might take a loooooooooonnnnnnng time to delete all
those files.
