Clean install of 98SE after XP Pro. installed

D

Dan

Okay, I have decided to do a clean install of 98SE. I have XP Professional
installed on the D: drive and 98SE is on the C: drive. I have seen the
following web page on the Internet but I don't want to risk messing up the XP
Pro. install in any way if possible.

http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_98_after_windows_xp.htm

Windows 98SE is on the c:\ hard drive but it really is now FUBAR. The
software drivers do not even fully load anymore in the device manager even
after removing them. Then by using the install hardware driver you can get
some of them back but not all of them. I guess I have the option of doing an
over install of 98SE but I would prefer the clean install route of 98SE since
I want to get rid of all the garbage left over in 98SE. Aparently the
registry is still in good shape at least according to scanreg/fix and the
registry has been optimized by scanreg/opt. I am at a loss for the best
procedure and would appreciate good and thoughtful input. By the way, I
suggest to future people to automatically edit the msconfig and limit ram to
512 mb before going above this level because I have now found this to be a
more effective way to limit ram for 98SE than changing other settings
especially if you have 2 gigabytes of ram or more and still want to use 98SE
which is starting to get more and more difficult due to the fact of less and
less support for the operating system and the end of its life (in terms of
being supported) effective July 11, 2006 if memory serves me correctly by
Microsoft. My main objective is to be able to have backwards compatibility
with DOS programs and games with the secondary objective of being able to run
most modern applications with the exception of course of some of the latest
games for computers.

Dan

I am replying to myself but I wanted to let everyone know that I am posting
from 98SE again and now it needs fine tuning.

Steps that worked for me: (not suggested to the novice for sure)

1. fdisk --- partition properly
2. format c:\ --- where 98SE was installed
3. remembered to remove extra memory and downgrade to 512 mb's of ram
4. Installed 98SE
5. used startup floppy disk to help install 98SE with proper bootsect.dos
5. Debug <READ.SCR at a:\ prompt
6. Finished and began to get proper drivers and stuff from cd's
7. Grateful thanks to Doug Knox for the information to properly accomplish
this task

Very nice! You did well! Glad to see it! Looks to me it was Daniel Petri
who wrote that up, not Knox. Maybe specify exactly what fine tuning you
have in mind-- if other than just to wrap tinfoil thrice round that 98SE
side!

Thank you! I am working to get everything set just the way I like it again.
See you and thanks for all your advice and support over the years also. BTW,
where is Gary S. Terhune at because I have not seen very many posts by him
recently. Also, what is the consensus about top posting, bottom posting or

You are welcome. Keep us informed. I see (in the other thread), if this
fresh install ultimately fails to satisfy, you will try cquirke's
suggestion. Lots of MVPs do it that way. As Terhune has run out of toes
for his poodles to grab onto, he no longer sits much at his computer in
an earthquake zone. However, he does pop in & out still-- I have seen
him recently...!...

Thanks! I actually did try the download of Microsoft Virtual Machine with
98SE for XP Professional and it works okay but definately not as good as the
operating system itself. For one thing when I tried to install programs for
98SE on it --- it gave me error messages and would not install them. It
happened with some of the Sierra game collections that I tried. However,
these now support Dosbox and work okay with Dosbox but still not as well as
they run in 98SE since they were originally DOS games.

I THOUGHT the XP-irradiation would have that effect, but didn't want to

However, PCR I have yet to go back to the 2 gigabytes and am still using 512

I see. Well, that's a little tricky (going by what I've read). Never let
the W98 side use more than 512 KB. ALSO, I believe, you should NOT boot
to Win98 with more RAM allowed to the MaxFileCache than actually is
installed in the computer. THEREFORE, make the following change-- but do
not reboot until at least 512 KB is available...!...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kben-us304943&Product=w98
Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than 1.5 GB of RAM

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kbEN-USq184447
Insufficient Memory

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kbEN-US253912
"Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed

(1) "START, Run, MSConfig, System.ini tab, [vcache] section".
Don't just open the section click it to highlight.
(2) Click the "New" button
(3) Type in: "MaxFileCache=524288"
(4) Click "Apply" and "OK".
(5) Reboot, IF that much (512 KB) is already available.
OTHERWISE, just shut down & add the RAM.

JUST, don't exceed usable RAM, as seen at "START, Run, MSInfo32"...
376MB RAM, it says for me, because Video has grabbed away 8 MB.

Here is more that I've seen Badour post elsewhere...!...

.........Quote...............................
Here's some info on ram you might find helpful:

Over 512 mb or more of ram:

"Out of Memory" Errors with Large Amounts of RAM Installed [Q253912]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kbEN-USQ253912

This article contains instructions which basically say: add this line
in
system.ini, under [vcache]: MaxFileCache=512000
***************************

1 gb or more of ram:

Error Message: Insufficient Memory to Initialize Windows [Q184447]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kbEN-USQ184447
***************************

1.5 gb or more of ram:

Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than 1.5 GB of RAM [Q304943]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kbEN-USQ304943

The practical limit for W98 is 1.5 gb however, there are people who
claim
to run with 2 gb. Your plan for 768 mb is OK but it takes the tweak
mentioned above.

Watch out for Brian A. taking a grab at that beer, & don't spill any on
the computer! OK, enjoy, & pleasant dreams!

So, did you ever install the other 1.5GB of ram?
Hopefully you did and it's working well.
I run a dual boot 98-2000 with 1 GB of ram and I only had to add the line to
the [vcache] section of System.ini.
One GB of ram runs just great on both systems.

Actually, Win98SE uses 1GB very well. MaxFileCache just limits the maximum
amount of system memory allocated for caching files but lets it use all the
ram for its own use. (Win98SE seems to have problems when over 1GB of ram
is allowed to be recognized).

I believe you already know this, but I was just trying to clarify this for
others that may have read your post.

I believe that the accepted value for the MaxFileCache line is 70% of your
physical ram up to a max value of 524288.
At least that's what I remembered from my earlier game playing days.

OK. That's right, yea-- 1 MB, & I already knew, uhuh. The MAIN point I
was trying to make is... do not let the MaxFileCache control more RAM
than actually is installed & usable to Win98. Someone at this NG once
made that discovery the hard way!

70% of usable RAM, keeping in mind 524288 must not be exceeded? I can't
quite recall everything I knew about that-- & I may even have done
limited experiments! OK, Buffalo-- fine! 70%, then! OK, thanks.
