Save to folder

Win98SE - Using my old PC while my WinXP PC gets a new hard drive :-(

Is there a way to change the default "Save To" folder from "My Documents" to
a folder of my choice, and make it stick?
(Even after changing from the default folder 6 times Win98 refuses to
remember)

If you are using a program such as CrapCleaner or something similar,
be sure to uncheck the section reegarding MRU's.

How did change the default location?

You should be able to change it in the registry at:
Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Double click in the "Name" column "Download Directory" and change the "Value Data" to the path you want.

This registry key appears to be the appropriate one to edit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

See the "Personal" entry in the right hand pane.

Otherwise use Tweak UI from Microsoft's Power Toys.

I must be missing something. The default folder you save a file to is
controlled by the application you are running - Word, Paintshop Pro, etc -
provided it will let you do that. In the case of those two programs I save
them to desktop by default, but for each programj I have to go to the setup
options and choose it.

Only some (generally the most expensive) apps have that ability, Roger. The
rest take their lead from Windows. Windows usually saves to the last used
folder for that particular app, but other apps always default to My
Documents, or My Pictures, My Blah Blah, etc. It all depends on the app. All
Windows can do is provide the default folders. It can't make an app use
them.

Correct, and when you use a cleaner app that erases MRU's the
previously chosen path gets deleted and the path goes back to the
default.
