Which flash player for Firefox 2?

L

lb

I have been experimenting with Firefox 2 and downloaded the latest
flash player which was 9.0.124 or something like that. No complaints
from the installer, but the outcome was pretty ugly. Corrupted video
and bringing the browser to a crawl, I barely got it closed before it
locked up my system. Going to the system requirements page, firefox 2
was not listed for windows 98 for this version of flash player.

Anyone know which player will work with 98 and FF 2?

Thanks

The latest flash player *should* work with Firefox 2.x in Win98. There have been
some reported issues, but I think they are more related to deficiencies in older
video drivers in use on some 98 systems.

The Flash Player system requirements page
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/systemreqs/
states for Win98:
Firefox 1.x, Mozilla 1.x, Netscape 7.x or later

That means Firefox 1.x or later, Mozilla 1.x or later, Netscape 7.x or later.
Vendors tend to lump all Mozilla browsers into one inclusive sentence in their
system requirements pages.

However, they also list the following "minimum" requirements:
Intel® Pentium® II 450MHz or faster processor (or equivalent)
128MB of RAM

I guess I only read it at 1X. I will give it another try, My CPU is
fine, but I have an old video card so maybe that is it.

The Ati 9800 XT works great in 98 Second Edition with ME drivers at least for
me if you want a good decent graphics card that is currently supported at
least for now. However, remember the modern driver downloads will all be for
XP and Vista.

I reinstalled the driver and all seems well now. I think it was a
website issue at the time.
I have a Voodoo 5500 AGP and do not really play games anymore so it
gets me by.

Guess I spoke too soon, it only works for some sites. If I use IE 6,
I do not have problems viewing the same file. IE 6 uses the same
version of flash player also. I would post pictures, but that is not
allowed here. I am using Firefox 2.0.0.16 which is the latest that
runs on 98.

Solution = upgrade your video card like I did --- ATI Radeon 9800 XT was the
best I could find for Windows 98 Second Edition and it uses Windows ME
drivers without any problem. BTW, I also use a all-in-one HP Printer that
uses Windows 2000 drivers without any problems.

Nvidia, I am biased against because their video card totally trashed an old
computer of mine when upgrading from a 3dfx card. Sure, it could have been
just a fluke but I like the little person and so ATI is for me.

However, with this custom built rig which originally was a Falcon Northwest
Computer which came with Windows 98 --- I have had Falcon NW update it at
first and then now I upgrade it with help of friend, Raymond first from
Tucson, Arizona and now friend Jeff from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Now you
all now where I live if you were not sure --- happy now ---- :-?

<BTW, originally from New York City -- Manhatten -- born and raised -- year
1975 -- year of Dan, Microsoft, and my favorite airplane the old-school A-10
Thunderbolt II (Warthog) which is in the process of being upgraded from
analog to digital --- awesome and the Raptor -- so cool and fast and so new
school but ch-ching -- very expensive. I know you guys are good so I bet you
know all about silly little guy Dan, now. <Right?!?>

Try Coping the Flash dll (NPSWF23.DLL)from:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.DLL

To:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPSWF32.DLL

That was the only way I could get Firefox to recognize that flash was
installed. If you have the "Mr Tech" about:plugins add on installed in
Firefox, Flash and the version number will show up in the list.

Yeah, Try John Dulak's idea first but my idea if you want a really good new
graphics video card for 98 Second Edition -- I bought mine new on ebay and it
runs like a champ -- posting in XP SP3 with I.E. 7 this time since certain
services require XP.

That dll is already there, but thanks for the suggestion.

I have been giving the video card upgrade some thought for awhile
before this. This is a 6 year old computer that works well now, but
is showing signs of age. ie: onboard LAN and sound going out, having
to change PCI slots to get sound card recognized again. The computer
is fast though and does most everything I want it to.

I started experimenting with Firefox, because of the difficulties I
was having with IE locking up and displaying secure websites. The
lockups occur when I use a link within a page to open a new page. The
original page will lock up if left running in the background too
long. This only happens on certain sites and in most cases I can have
multiple windows open without any problems. It seems really strange
to me that the same site plays flash fine in IE but not in Firefox
using the same version of flash player. Makes me think that this is a
browser or flash issue. I sent a report to Firefox about this.

The videos on cnn.com are an example of a site I have had difficulties
with.

I have been looking on Ebay at cards, but am not willing to spend the
$60 or so for a new card and the used ones are going for around $30.

I am thinking that it is getting close to time to buy or build a new
computer, but I hate the bloat found in the newer OS'es.

Looks like I am not the only one with this problem, might be a Firefox
2.X issue.

That's pretty funny, considering the reports that CNN videos play fine with FF2 but
not with FF3....the opposite of what your link stated:

Firefox 3 wouldn't play CNN video
http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?locale=nl&comments_parentId=69250&forumId=1

There might be some useful info there for you.

It looks to be a possible Extensions issue, though the add-ons involved may vary.

Do you have the Firefox Extensions IE Tab or IE View installed? or Toolbar
Buttons?
These are mentioned as being the problem for some.

Conversely, some report that installing the IE Tab extension and using it to view
the videos FIXES the issue for them.

Another report states to go to Firefox Preferences, under "Content" - "File Types",
select WMV and then for the application that you want to open it, select Windows
Media Player.

Here's another interesting thread on the issue:

Interesting, it never said whether the install of FF3 worked or not so
I assumed that it did. I have not as yet installed the IE tab. I
have another webite from weather.com which draws a fishing forecast
graph using flash that is also corrupted with FF2.

http://www.weather.com/activities/recreation/outdoors/fishing/?from=breadcrumbs

Thanks for the reply, yesterday I sent in a bug report using their
contact us/free videos link.

I installed the IE tab and that has yielded what I hope is just a
temporary solution until this issue gets repaired.

Thanks to all.

FYI:
I also found another fix which basically answered my original
question. I removed player 124 and installed player 45 and now it
seems to work fine. I did not try any more recent players as I found
this solution for someone elses problem and and acheived success, so I
left it.

OK....you removed Flash Player 9.0.124 and replaced it with version 9.0.45?

I figured that this may be the case. Perhaps you can tell me how to
complain to Adobe about this. I have been all over their website and
cannot find a way for an individual consumer to contact them. All I
can do is contact the websites that use their player and hope that
they will do something about it.

I am still using version 124 in IE. I may try other versions with
Firefox 2. Unfortunately their removal tool deletes all versions so
both must be installed again.

How many of these vulnerabilities ultimately affect Windows 98SE?

Hundreds. That's why Windows 98 is obsolete. Deliberate on the part of

Well none of them have got me yet and I have been doing this internet
thing for 8 years now. Had some spyware years ago when no one knew
what it was, but cleaned that up and have been safe since. Never had
a virus or trojan and I cannot get a root certificate. I think that
no one in the malware business tries to attack people using 98 anymore
and in that respect I am "maybe" safer than someone with a newer non
obsolete OS. This is like an old car that still runs and gets me
there.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate that someone from MS is willing to
come hare and help out.

I got version 47 to work, but higher versions all had the same issue.
I am contacting all of the websites that have this issue and
generating a bug report. Hopefully someone will get through to Adobe
and they will fix this as they claim that their newest version is
compatible with FF2.
