Tapping into My Wireless

I'm running XP Home SP3 with a Linksys wireless router. How can I monitor
the wireless connection, to know whether someone else may be trying to access
it without my knowledge?

Well, you could install a packet sniffer.

Instead of monitoring for the presence of 'unwanted' intruders, install
MyWiFiZone to keep them out. BTW, it's free for Home Use:
